Leak severs link to al-Qaeda’s secrets

A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition. It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.

Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.

The founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network.

Why are we sure about this?

Investigate and get to the bottom of this.

My bet is someone trying to get perks from the press, a payoff or political advantage for their party did this.

In all cases, they have endangered us all.

The operatives aligned against Bush within the CIA would be a more accurate guess, IMO. Think Mary McCarthy types.

Wild belligerent speculation on the second post to this thread.

Why in hell would that occur, and what could possibly be the motive when the man isn't even running for office, and is all but out of the Oval Office? That would entail great risk with little to gain.

"I agree with a lot of what Rusty said. I think SITE is greatly overrating getting a copy of Bin Laden video if they really got it from a terrorist website or forum, because in this case it is not a big deal at all"

I agree with you, sir.

it was leaked from within the CIA by someone NOT appointed by this administration. How much do you want to bet?

And what would they have to gain by taking this epic criminal risk, when the man is not even running for office?

The wild speculation here is amazing and rather naive at best.

"This is just the same old shit from the 'professional' intel bureaucracy, whose loyalties first are to their organizations and maybe later to the nation."

Actually, the worst problem lately is that during the Clinton administration, the intelligence community was barred from interdepartmental communications BY the administration, while the Clintonistas filled said departments full of bots. They are still there. Leaking like sieves in a successful bid to derail the WoT.

True. One of them, anyway.

It usually does happen immediately. The less known, the quicker the “Jorge” butten is pressed in some peoples’ brains.

Problem was, the in/out checks of bags were cursory and nobody ever checked my pockets for a flash drive or other media storage device.

That was your responsibility to police as a cleared employee. If you had taken such a device into cleared spaces, and it was discovered, you would have been nailed with a security violation. Ditto for the facility and security officer.

To destroy. McCarthy was a member of a group that believes - or says they do - that the public really has the right to know EVERYTHING the intelligence community is doing. Their mission: to leak as much damaging stuff to the press as possible. It doesn't mattter to them who's killed. The end justifies the means.

McCarthy got stung when the higher ups got wind. She wasn't the only perp, just the highest on the food chain that was caught. There was a noticable drop in leaks after that. Sounds like they house needs to be cleaned again, 'cause the cockroaches are coming back out to feed.

According to the article in the WP, Katz spoke first to White House counsel Red F. Fielding, and then Joel Bagnal, deputy assistant to the president for homeland security. Katz sent it to both. So, we’ve got two names. What went wrong?

I don’t know. I’m not even sure I believe the article. It reminds me far too much of the Plame Game.

“Will they ever plug up any of those leaks?”
**Not until they start sending the leakers to prison for 20 years.**

One of the astonishing things about the recent Israeli raid into Syria was not that they were capable of doing it (we expect them to be able to pull it off), but that it was not leaked. They are as leaky as the US. So “people in the know” were surprised they they did not know this time around. Speaks volumes about our (Western) attitude toward keeping military secrets, when we amazed that a secret remained secret?

Chris

This Bin Ladin video leak may not the big deal as SITE is portraying it to be in particular if they obtained it from a terrorist forum who showed it briefly and then retract it before the Al Qaeda offical media wing "Al Sahab" released it. As I mentioned in an earlier post, during my monitoring of the terrorist websites and forums on Septembet 7th there was a rumor going around there which said that Bin Laden video was briefly released on a terrorist forum called "Sunan" and then it was retrieved after that because it was not yet officially released by Al Sahab media wing of Al Qaeda.

My concern is this could be like the NY Times and the Docex project all over again from the blame America first crowd.

Also, the video itself was such a hatchet job: there must be a reason the admin is letting the world think it believes the video was timely/authentic. The video provided absolutely no evidence binnie is alive. I’d like to think that our intelligence has some and knows what they are doing?
