At least the reporter’s bias was clear in the very first sentence. That saved me the trouble of reading further, as I know the rest of the article will be total leftist crap.

"A Latino commiting document fraud and being reported to the police? My God! How long can this injustice be allowed to continue?!It is an awful thing to see isn't i?. Sometimes I wouldn't blame them if they stopped sneaking into this country.

“Rather than simply refuse service to customers suspected of presenting phony or altered documents to obtain licenses or identification, employees began to alert police.”
Shouldn’t this have been the policy all along? What’s the big deal? Break the law....the police get notified. Seems reasonable.

Isn’t Oregon one of the most ethnically homogeneous states in the country? Something like 85% white? Outside of those border hopping Canucks, and international flights visa overstayers, it would seem Hispanics would have to be the largest percentage of the illegal immigrant population who would attempt to use forged documents.
Common sense is not going to die in Oregon I hope.

“Why the assumption that Latinos were singled out?”
So what if they are? We DO NOT have a problem with illegal British, illegal Irish or even illegal Sudanese. We have a problem with MEXICANS and others from Central America. 35 million illegals is 34999999 too fricking many. We need to TARGET those who are the problem. If it is Mexicans, so be it.

We haven’t had common sense in Oregon in a long time. In fact, just a few years ago there was someone working out of the governor’s office to illegally distribute drivers licenses to Illegal Immigrants. The DMV and other social service departments also cooperate with the Mexican Consulate to put on special events where Hispanics are instructed about how to get drivers licenses, register to vote and get signed up for social services.
As to the ethnic makeup of Oregon - hispanics are definately the largest minority group in the state. In fact Woodburn, a major town between Salem and Portland, is majority hispanic. A lot of the reason for this is that we have a lot of agriculture in Oregon and many people came up from Mexico to work as agricultural workers. In fact, we have several hispanics who work on my family’s farm, one of whom is a naturalized American citizen, and our workers are all really great people. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing number of illegals coming into Oregon who are not good citizens and this has caused major problems.

“why do they ASSUME the name is hispanic?”
Pure reporter bias.
The airport manager and owner of the old hotel in Lareto Mexicos name is Al Green and he is pure spanish, names don’t mean much.

guess they had to start somewhere..drivers licenses can make it easier to obtain voter ID cards...after all I have to produce at least 3 forms of proof I’m an American citizen to “renew” (with photo ID) drivers license. Crazy eh?
...yeah, each form of ID gives you “points” to accumulate to get it done...well you know after all, since your an American citizen surely you have all the available “documents”....
One was my birth certificate which I obtained a copy of from the county court house back in “84” which was no longer considered “legal” since original birth records were stolen from said court house and now I had to drive down to Trenton (state capitol) to get a new one at $21 apiece with available copies at additional $2 each because the brain trust at the hall of records couldn't’t keep my information confidential and secure.
Ah yes,I won’t bother boring you with what transpired during the 3 hours at the state hall of records in the lovely city of Trenton...
Yeah just give em the license, this way they can travel where ever......no paper work, don’t want to offend.

Read carefully: before the DMV used to "deny service," i.e., not give them a driver's license.
Now, they give them the license or id, and file a police report.
So the perps get the contraband (the id) anyway, and the paper is now complianing that reports of obvious fraud are still too much of a burden!

Just because Latino’s were uncovered does not mean that they were singled out.
It means that so many of them were seeking fradulent documents.
