According to multiple sources, Kim Jong-il set out to mend relations with his half-brother Kim Pyong-il. In a cut-throat struggle to become Kim Il-sung's successor, Kim Jong-il wiped out his half-brother's support base, declaring, "Side branches ought to be cut out," when his half-brother's faction had the upper hand.
After he was defeated in the power struggle, Kim Pyong-il was banished to N. Korean embassies overseas, serving N. Korean ambassador to one (E. European) country to another, but last September, he was recalled from N. Korean embassy to Poland, and resettled in N. Korea. This information was conveyed by senior officials at administrative offices of N. Korean (Worker's) Party.
According to them, Kim Jong-il himself made this decision. Kim Pyong-il was recalled and given one of the best mansions in Bong-su-san-jong, located in Botonggang District of Pyongyang. The sources carefully ventured to predict that Kim Pyong-il's forced isolation is now over.
Some argue that this decision reflects Kim Jong-il's attempt to win the backing of Kim Pyong-il and his supporters in light of precarious situation both inside and outside N. Korea, while others are of the opinion that it is an attempt by Kim Jong-il to keep Kim Pyong-il under close watch to deter his half-brother from meddling into succession issue.
It is rather well-known that Kim Pyong-il has the great appearance as Kim Il-sung, is well-liked, and enjoys solid support among high level figures and those around him in N. Korea.
