Youths riot in French town

Saint-Dizier, France - French police clashed overnight with youths who went on a rampage in a town in eastern France, prompting Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie to travel to the trouble spot.

Between 40 and 50 masked youths used metal bars to smash a firefighters' vehicle and a police car dispatched to a shopping mall in Saint-Dizier, said Yves Guillot, the head of the Haute-Marne regional government.

The youths then fanned out across the town of 30 000 inhabitants, setting fire to two buildings, a car rental office and 16 vehicles. Police reinforcements were sent in to quell the violence.

"We are trying to understand what happened. We have had clashes in our town but not on this scale," said Mayor Francois Cornut-Gentille.

The youths are said to be residents of Saint-Dizier's low-income housing project, Vert-bois, which is home to 12 000 people.

Alliot-Marie was due to travel to Saint-Dizier, some 200km east of Paris, after police and fire emergency authorities were targeted in the violence, her office said.

Hundreds of suburbs across France exploded into rioting for three weeks in late 2005, highlighting the nation's failure to integrate its Arab and African immigrants.

I’ll just politely suggest that if Sarko gives them a “whiff of the grape” ... I won’t accuse him of human rights violations.

Here's the modern 105 and 120 mm equivalents.

M1040 105mm cannister.

M1028 120 mm cannister

A briefing in pdf format, with much better pictures is Here

I'd think the 120mm main gun of the French LeClerec Main Battle tank could fire the M1028 round.

A bit more likely to be employed against rioting suburban Youts are the AMX-10RC with TML 105 turret, which fires all standard NATO 105mm ammunition, including presumably the M1040 cannister round.

How many in this country would shoot a masked person setting fire to their house or car? I know I would.

I'd shoot a masked person setting fire to my neighbors' and friends' houses or cars. But I live in Texas, where it's legally justifiable to use deadly force to prevent arson, among other crimes, whether against your property or that of third parties.

It is well known, has been for centuries, that if you shoot rioters they will stop rioting.

Usually. But not always. Sometimes it just POs them. Think "Boston Massacure".

I’m getting ill.................lol!

Don't get sick. Get going.

.............

To Texas!

We can shoot criminal who come on to our property to commit a variety of crimes, including in this case arson and criminal mischief. It's all there in the "Justification for use of Deadly force" section of the Texas Penal code.

Nearly half the people in this town live in one housing project? WTF?

Dhimmi Frog reporting that the Arabs and Africans did not fail, no indeed, the nation failed. Twaddle.

Too bad you didn’t get to stay longer. You could have thrown some bricks and rocks at “The Man” and burned your rental car! (sarcasm lamp is lit)

LOL. I usually avail myself of public transport when I'm off to meetings in Europe. (Not for the trip to Germany tomorrow, though -- they're having railroad strikes.)

But we had a semi-amusing moment at that meeting. During breakfast the McDonald's across the parking was robbed at gunpoint. My wife was treated to the sight of a full squad in SWAT gear running through the hotel restaurant. I was upstairs getting ready for the meeting, and so was a little surprised to see police in the parking lot, looking for all the world like they were dead serious. I quickly decided to walk in the other direction and was (barely) allowed to leave the hotel for my meeting.

Apparently the place was blocked the whole morning, bullhorns, etc. The police finally charged the place... to find it completely empty.

The robbers had mingled with the hostages they'd freed.

Oops.

The grape should ideally be delivered by gunnery capable of spewing forth ~~streams~~ of "crowd-control discipline" with a single activation the firing mechanism.

The French military has plenty of "bugles". Time for some martial music!

This time around, there seems to be no precipitating event, suggesting that the violence will not again expand nationally in short order.

It certainly seems unwise to speculate that this is a limited incident. After all, five days from now will mark the 1,275th anniversary of the conclusion of the Battle of Tours - all the "precipitating event" the "youths" need.
