Thompson to Dobson (take a hike)
NRO ^ | 10/4/2007 | Byron York

Posted on 10/04/2007 5:25:13 AM PDT by Neville72

It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:

A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…

I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…

Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"

I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

Show the quote-prove we’re liars

the quote is at the link. I don’t think you’re a liar, though. Maybe you missed it when it happened, or have blinders on when it comes to Dobson. I don’t know. But the quote says what it says.

Who in the hell is Dobson to judge anyone’s credentials as a Christian. I thought that judgement was between the individual and God. Where does Dobson fit into this picture?

The religious voters are a big part of the gop and if they run a 3rd party candidate we can forget about winning the presidency. The cast of republican candidates are inadequate at best so either way it looks like 2008 will be a repeat of 2006

"I will actively vote for WHICHEVER republican ultimately wins the nomination. It is my firm belief, and indisputable fact, that failure to do so is a de facto vote for whichever traitor ultimately represents worldwide marxism, er the demorats, in the general election.

Sound thinking bears repeating.

It's bad enough that some "single-issue" short-sighted dim-wits want to cut off their noses to spite their faces, but they're deliberately taking the rest of us with them when they help the 'RATS come to power as they go down to defeat.

They claim they're doing it because they are "concerned" about the murder of babies in the womb, the dissing and undercutting our our military, the undermining of our constitution, and every other evil intent that is embraced by the low-life mentalities that make up the base of the 'RAT party, yet they are willing to take the precise steps that are necessary to put the VERY WORST examples of those evils into power.

They have my UTTER contempt. bttt

"Everyone knows he's conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for," Dobson said of Thompson. "[But] I don't think he's a Christian; at least that's my impression," Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party's conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination"

Worth repeating.

Remarks from James Dobson questioning a fellow Christians faith --- Fred Thompson`s faith --- was outrageous. Dobson's anti Thompson remarks have come on two different occasions now. It wasn't a one time event. I've lost a great deal of respect for James Dobson. I know members of Focus on the Family here in Colorado Springs. Most will not outwardly criticize Dobson`s remarks about Fred. However, they don't agree with them either.

Fred's remarks on TV last night where the perfect response to an attack on his religious beliefs. A deeply felt issue of personal faith with God.

It is amazing how Freeprs will believe the MSM when it supports their agenda.

Pick one:

Dobson says: Thompson not a Christian

Rush: Phony Solider's

Well, now you believe USWN&R writer Dan Gilgoff and how he quotes Dobson.

Here is a quote from Mr Gilgoff:

"The success of the effort is by no means ensured; in March, Focus on the Family's James Dobson told U.S. News that he doubted Thompson was really a Christian. But Dobson and Thompson have since talked, with Dobson rumored to be reassessing Thompson. And prominent social conservative Paul Weyrich, who met recently with Thompson and evangelical activists, said the former senator "was in agreement with us on almost everything." source

Is this true or was Fred a liar last night?

It is nothing short of amazing that this thread is filled with Conservative Christian bashing all from a USWN&R story based on a phone call. I'll Take Dobsons word over Dan Gilgoff and not bash him over a "leaked" email either. But some folks refuse to see the agenda here to discredit the Christian conservatives in the the next election.

Instead, there are too many Freepers who are willing to help the left.

Dobson said he didn’t believe Thompson to be a Christian

That little thingy from the Sermon on the Mount -- "Judge not, lest ye yourself be judged" must have slipped JD's mind that day.

It is difficult to miss the fact that in the link you have posted, there is not a single quote from Dobson addressing the comment. I don’t see it retracted, only “clarified”, which, if we were discussing someone on the left, would be characterized as “spin”.

“However, Thompson might want to go easy on the justifiably discontent Conservative Christians that.”

That is a complete mischaracterization of what Thompson said.

He said “He would not dance to anyONE’S tune” In other words he was not going to take orders from any man to become President. Thompson holds more of the same beliefs that most Christian conservatives do than any top tier candidate and therefor is their single best choice.

Third party.

Third party gets you Hillary.

85% friend vs 5% friend. Hmm... Real tough choice there.

“Really? Sounds stupid to me.”

Of course it does, if you’re a blindly loyal Dobsonian.

Dobson is the type of moron who gives those on the Religious Right a horrendous reputation. I mean, really, who does this clown think he is?

Is this also a product of the “vast left wing conspiracy”?

DENVER (AP) — James Dobson, one of the nation’s most politically influential evangelical Christians, made it clear in a message to friends this week he will not support Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson.

Quote
In a private e-mail obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, Dobson accuses the former Tennessee senator and actor of being weak on the campaign trail and wrong on issues dear to social conservatives.
Quote
“Isn’t Thompson the candidate who is opposed to a Constitutional amendment to protect marriage, believes there should be 50 different definitions of marriage in the U.S., favors McCain-Feingold, won’t talk at all about what he believes, and can’t speak his way out of a paper bag on the campaign trail?” Dobson wrote.
Quote
“He has no passion, no zeal, and no apparent ‘want to.’ And yet he is apparently the Great Hope that burns in the breasts of many conservative Christians? Well, not for me, my brothers. Not for me!”

Thanks for your post.

Dobson has a huge man-crush on Gingrich, even though Gingrich has proven his untrustworthiness over and over........

There is going to be a Christian vote in the GOP. It just will not be coalesced under a Christian ‘leader’.

There are quote marks around Dobson’s comments, as well as quote marks around his spokesperson’s “clarification”.

Where has Dobson taken the time to explain himself, not through some intermediary, what he meant?

The original comments were made to a US News and World Report political writer, Dan Gilgoff, and reported on March 28, 2007. Gilgoff is also the author of The Jesus Machine: How James Dobson, Focus on the Family, and Evangelical America are Winning the Culture War.

The original story by Dan Gilgoff is HERE

A March 29 Dobson Press Release, saying his comments were mischaracterized, is HERE.
