YANGON (AFP) - UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari met Myanmar's junta leader Than Shwe in the nation's remote capital Tuesday, as the military regime insisted it was not to blame for a deadly crackdown on mass protests.

Gambari had been waiting since the weekend to see the reclusive general to express global outrage after security forces put down protests led by Buddhist monks, leaving at least 13 dead and hundreds -- possibly thousands -- behind bars.

The meeting in the capital Naypyidaw was expected to last for an hour, an information ministry official said on condition of anonymity.

It came as activists struggled to assess the scope of the crackdown and to locate hundreds of dissidents, monks and ordinary civilians who were arrested or went missing.

Diplomats have warned the death toll could be far higher than confirmed by the junta, which has ruled this nation with an iron fist for 45 years.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, describing the security sweep as "brutal," said the number of dead was "substantially higher" than what had been reported so far.

There are now reports about piles of dead bodies hidden in the jungles, and floating dead bodies of monks at the rivers in Burma, killed by troops of the Burma military. The photo of the dead monk is just one of the entire picture of the genocide that made it to the public. This is no more a crackdown, but terrorism against the people, and terrorism against democracy.

We have no right to force our racist, sexist, homophobic, materialistic western values and culture on these innocent, peaceful people...

Maybe the leader of the Junta can come to Columbia University and get an ovation for denying this is going on.

(/sarcasm)

Not near as graphic as things can get. We may see worse yet, a lot closer to home.

I just strongly hope for a boycott of Beijing Olympic for China in the back supporting this genocide.

Our media is silent and our politicians are silent about this. Who is going to know?

I was thinking about writing an e-mail to Duncan Hunter, but it seems only people in his district can write one.

That makes sense through his House office but now that he’s running for Pres. there must be a way to contact him through his campaign. There was a FReeper acting as a liason for DH who was doing regular interviews via thread with him. I haven’t checked on that for a while so I don’t know if it’s still going on. I don’t recall the FReeper name either.

please put me on your Ping list

You know what is incredible to me ?
That there is almost no protest , no outcry , no call the their own government to DO SOMETHING! by the Thai Buddhist Sangha , right next door....
Just incredible.

If anything like this were happen to them in Thailand , would they be so complacent ? I wonder....

Coming to a global community near you

as soon as Shrillery, goons et al can consolidate more overtly their globalist power grabs.

After all, the population is slated to be reduced to 200-500 million, globally. Must reduce the global infection of humans dramatically . . . for the environment . . . and the children . . . and, of course the whales and polar bears . . .

Probably Goresickle or the Breck Girl will nominate the Junta for the Nobel Peace prize . . . for bringing so much eternal peace to so many monks.

INDEED.

Though I think changing “may” to “will” would make it more accurate and true to the globalist’s plans.

Won’t happen.

imho.

China is too powerful already globally. The Junta are immune.

And, the globalists love these not so dry runs at population reduction and control. Helps them refine their plans.

The Thai’s are historically very loathe to enter into conflict with much of anyone.

HOWEVER, dare to even insult their King, the King’s family or Buddha or Buddhism

and one can find one’s self very bloody and thrown out . . . if fortunate to get off that easy.

Very hard to watch with the inaction of other countries. The feeling is a lot like the one I had as Cambodia went down under the Khmer Rouge except this has been a very long and protracted agony.

No to complacency, I live out in the country near the border in the North, these country boys are Rednecks, just Thai style, there are quite a few unregistered 2nd ammendment things (don’t want to trigger a key word) out here that would come out in such a case

Exactly . . . just like the Iraqis who risked their lives to get out and vote, these folks are obviously way too backwards to have Democracy shoved down their primitive throats>

[A woman in our local paper opined that the Iraqis weren't nearly sophisticated enough to be able to have a Democracy - pretty much expressing that being butchered by despots was their rightful lot in life.]
