Throw a pebble and you’ll hit one.
My guess is she was not going to any rehab center, but it is a proactive excuse for what the tox screen may reveal.
Geezzz...I thought someone sick enough to be on their way to rehab would have an escort cause of this kind of behaviour...
Actually that’s a good point. Sounds like an eating disorder in addition to chemical addiction. Sounds a LOT like someone in my family— I could so see this being her.
Sending a drunk off to travel alone to alchohol rehab? Real caring family she had there.
This is a sad case, indeed. It seems that she was unbalanced, at best, and, probably under the influence of alcohol or something worse. A couple of questions need to be answered in this case. Why was she traveling alone under such circumstances? Why was she left handcuffed, unobserved and unsupervised in a detaining cell? The medical examiner’s report should shed some light on the cause of death. At this point, I doubt that she strangled herself in those handcuffs. Heart failure, stroke, alcohol or drug overdose all seem more likely.
With respect and sympathy for your situation, there is a bit of responsibility on the family for loosing a bipolar person on society when s/he is not moderated by meds, if that is indeed the situation here.
Nobody expects a cop to put themselves at real risk. But there is a difference between an attitude and a person who is ill.
The ill person can’t modify their behavior as requested, because they don’t understand or don’t realize what is happening.
Bipolar people often act just like aggressive drunks. They can really act out, so a cop has to be careful. Just the same, they have to be treated different from just nasty people, because the reason they are acting that way is totally different.
For instance, my husband didn’t get medical treatment after being taken to jail. He ended up in the hospital for two months because he ended up so irrational.
This woman was obviously just thrown in a holding tank. If she’s bipolar, she’s capable of ANYTHING. That has to be taken into account. They’ll jump out windows, bang their head against the floor, etc.
I sure wouldn’t want to be a cop!
what amazes me is when people call the LAWYER before dialing 911!
in this instance, though, she should not have been left alone. but if she was known to act erratic and was on medication, why was she alone in the airport. who's responsibility is it? the families?
unless there is some way to know a person is bipolar via a medic alert bracelet or a traveling companion, I think it is physically impossible to train every security person for this type of contingency.
I think the one change that will happen is that the “detained” will not be left alone or unmonitored by video.
Im tryin to make me go to rehab
I said no, no, no
I can tell you the worst abuse my husband had by the police, was when I called them for help because I couldn’t get him to the hospital by myself.
He started fighting with me when I tried to get an ambulance, and when the police got to the house, they hauled him off to jail for domestic abuse rather than escort him to the hospital.
Then I had to go speak to the judge, process him out of jail, get him to the hospital (by myself again!) AND hire a lawyer.
I called 911 for help, and got blasted. I’ll never do it again. And this is a VERY common story for families with mental illness. Take note of all the threads you see when family calls for help with an ill family member, and they end up dead.
This woman probably shouldn’t have been alone. But I can tell you many bipolar people are alone. Their families can’t deal with them. Only really committed families can last through this.
I don’t think there is an answer, except for the divine power of God and reconciliation of the family. Society really doesn’t have an answer for dealing the severe bipolar illness. They can be violent, irrational, and aggressive - the exact type of individual that is put through hell in today’s conformist socialist society.
I feel sorry for the woman but believe she should have had a companion to escort her to her destination. This would have never happened if she had a travel buddy.
This story says she was on her way to an facility dealing with alcohol addiction. None of the stories has said she was drinking, but it's possible. She also could have done some drugs that caused her death. Haven't heard about any toxicology reports; guess we'll have to wait to find that out.
The point of rehab is to break a pattern of behavior. It helps to get away from the people and places associated with that behavior. The middle of the desert is a good environment for that kind of break.
As far as what killed this woman, I can't say. It could have been an overdose. it could have been an underdose -- that is, withdrawal. There could have been any number of emotional or organic illnesses that were never diagnosed because she was self-medicating. Addiction is a cause of some problems and a symptom of others.
If anything, it is all on video.
You’re saying she wanted a smoke and a drink in the bar before her flight to Tucson?
