San Francisco - -- (09-25) 16:15 PDT SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom suspended Supervisor Ed Jew today for alleged official misconduct, began proceedings to remove him from office and named a 29-year-old political novice to take his place.
Jew was served this morning with a seven-page outline of charges at the Canton Flower Shop he owns on Waverly Place in Chinatown. The document, drawn up by the city attorney's office and signed by Newsom, accuses the rookie supervisor of misconduct for allegedly lying when he said he lived in District 4 in the Sunset and takes note of federal accusations that Jew sought money in exchange for influencing city permit decisions.
Newsom named his deputy budget director, Carmen Chu, to fill Jew's seat and swore her in during a private ceremony. She has never run for public office.
At 29, Chu is the same age Newsom was when then-Mayor Willie Brown appointed him to fill a vacancy on the Board of Supervisors in 1997.
"She's not a politician in the traditional sense," Newsom said at a City Hall news conference. "She comes for a policy perspective. That doesn't make it better or worse, but I wanted a policy person."
The mayor said that "as of this moment, Supervisor Ed Jew is suspended and is no longer serving in his official capacity as a member of the Board of Supervisors." City Hall building managers removed Jew's name from the door to his office.
A smiling Jew was at his flower shop earlier this morning, sitting with his friend and accountant Calvin Louie, president of the Chinese American Democratic Club.

A single vote by a San Francisco Board of Supervisors member whose grandfather emigrated from China seven decades ago has halted in its tracks a proposal to condemn as "hate speech" radio personality Michael Savage's criticism of illegal aliens in the United States.
The vote tonight was 9-1, with third generation San Franciscan Ed Jew turning in the veto vote, after getting up and affirming Savage's First Amendment right to express his opinion.

I think I heard Savage say that Ed Jew was the only native San Franciscan on the Board of Supervisors. All the others are carpetbaggers.
