Candidate (Duncan Hunter) Threatens Federal Money Over Ahmadinejad Columbia Speech
ABC NEWS ^ | 24 SEPT 2007 | Byron Wolf

Posted on 09/24/2007 10:14:15 AM PDT by radar101

Duncan Hunter, the Congressman from California, joined other Republican Presidential candidates over the weekend in condemning the upcoming address to Columbia University by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

But Hunter went a step further by pledging that if the speech goes forth he will introduce legislation in Congress to cut off federal assistance from the University. All federal assistance. This would presumably include research and scientific grants for the sciences and medical school.

"If the left-wingers of academia will not support our troops, they, in the very least, should not support our adversaries," Hunter said in a statement accompanying a warning letter he wrote to Lee Bollinger, the president of Columbia.

Bollinger has tried to meet the mounting criticism from Republican politicians head-on.

In a statement on the school's website on September 19th, Bollinger announced that he would introduce the Iranian President with a rebuke to Iran's treatment of women and its stance toward Israel and Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust.

Bollinter went on to say in the statement that hearing all ideas, no matter how "odious" is one of the basic tenets of a full education.

"I would also like to invoke a major theme in the development of freedom of speech as a central value in our society," Bollinger wrote. "It should never be thought that merely to listen to ideas we deplore in any way implies our endorsement of those ideas, or the weakness of our resolve to resist those ideas or our naiveté about the very real dangers inherent in such ideas. It is a critical premise of freedom of speech that we do not honor the dishonorable when we open the public forum to their voices. To hold otherwise would make vigorous debate impossible."

The threat of cutting off federal funds is something the government and Congress have used before when law schools tried to keep JAG lawyers from recruiting on campuses because the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy discriminates against gays, violating university nondiscrimination policies.

The government won the argument in March 2005, when the Supreme Court upheld the so-called Solomon Amendment, a 1996 measure that allowed the government to tie federal funding to military and ROTC recruiting. It is unclear if that law would be applicable in the case of the Ahmadinejad speech, which has nothing to do with military recruiting.

Hunter says the speech and the recent "General Betrayus" Moveon.org ad are emblematic of the emergence of the "extreme left wing."

"Columbia University's hosting of Ahmadinejad is a slap in the face of every one of the 165,000 U.S. troops serving in Iraq. As he speaks, his agents will be moving roadside bombs onto the battlefield to be used against America's military men and women," Hunter wrote

Are you insinuating Ron Paul is a conservative? Sorry, Log Cabin Republicans are under the same funding umbrella as Victory Fund Democrats. They sign a contract to be endorsed, so there is no possible way they can vote outside the terms of their contract.

Thanks for the response though!

Paul voted for MFN for China and thinks we shouldn’t use sanctions against anyone. Wow. And some think that’s ok.

Thanks for the response.

Yeah anytime.Funny how the conversation went from Hunter to Paul. But there's really not much worth discussing about Hunter.Except to say that he's bought into the tyrannical federal structure of the tax code hook line and sinker. That is how federal tyranny works, threatening tax-payers with their own money if they don't do so-and-so,and it makes me sick to see someone(another one) with an r after his name take this action. It's okay when our guy is a tyrant.

Like I said initially,if he were'nt just a RINO(that's republican in name only)he would call for cutting federal tax-payer money for one of the wealthiest schools in the world not just because they happen to disagree with him on some particular issue, but because the federal government should niot be in the education business. That's a pricipled republican position he wouldn't dare take. .

Today on Christian radio, I was listening to Attorney Jay Seculo (aclj.org) who fights for religiious liberty and other liberties, pro-life causes, etc., and Seculo also talks about current events.

I was happy to hear Jay Seculo say that Candidate Duncan Hunter threatened to stop federal $$ from going to Columbia because of the Ahmadinejad speech, then Jay Seculo added, and Hunter should know because he presently has a son serving in the Middle East.

If anyone wants to call Jay Seculo’s show sometime to bring out Hunter’s name again, if you call the show RIGHT AT NOON, Eastern Time, you have a fair chance of getting on the show. I have called the show myself, and will call re: Hunter next time I get the chance.

And you don’t have to wait that long because the show is only one-half hour (M-F).

The number is: 1-800-684-3110

You either don’t know what you’re talking about or trying to be deceitful. You’re the only one who knows for sure.

#5. What is your position on homeschooling? Please elaborate. And how do you plan to reign in the bloated Department of Education?

Hunter: I like homeschooling because it offers a clear choice for parents who want to impart values and knowledge to their children. I would substantially cut the bureaucracy in the Department of Education, top to bottom.

Congressman Hunter currently is the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee, after spending the previous 4 years as its chair. He is an original co-sponsor of the Fair Tax bill

Exactly what in post 66 is deceitful,or wrong?Specifically. It's easy to say that someone doesn't know what they're talking about without being specific,

What is your position on homeschooling? Please elaborate. And how do you plan to reign in the bloated Department of Education?.

It might surprise you to know that I am not running for president. You keep asking me about my positions. While I admit that's easier than defending Hunter's position on federal funds for Columbia(remember that, the topic of the thread),it's irrelevant. You just want to recite a litany of objections to Ron Paul.

Duncan Hunter is a modern conservative, the country has drifted so far left that he thinks that threatening to withhold federal money for behavior with which he disagrees is conservative because he feels the behavior is liberal. That's not the way it works.

I can’t be specific about our post # 66 because it was ALL nonsense.

Ron Paul wouldn’t even approve of your tactics.

Adios!

Fair Tax bill.

You shouldn't have brought that up.If there's one place Ron Paul stands head and shoulders over anyone else in the race,it's on the question of income taxes.Abolish the IRS and scrap the income tax. It's bad debating to have brought that up.

You still haven't answered the objection I originally raised. He's using the power of tax and spend to get someone to conform to his wishes.I guess you could suppose that if Columbia were to cancel the speech, all would be well again with Hunter and that he would send my hard-earned tax-maony to one of the wealthiest schools in the world.

Typical woman."I can't lay out a reasonable argument so everything you say is nonsense".You've done well representing your candidate.

Ron Paul wouldn’t even approve of your tactics.

Tactics?You mean making an argument?
