Strawberry meth seized in search (article from January 29, 2007)

A new kind of methamphetamine that has a strawberry flavor and bright pink coloring was seized for the first time in Carson City during a search of a Como Street apartment on Saturday, an official said.

"(We are) concerned that this new type of meth will be more attractive to a younger crowd and may surface in schools," said Sgt. Darrin Sloan, commander of the Carson City Sheriff's Department's Special Enforcement Team. "Parents and teachers, please be aware of this new kind of drug that is making its way into our culture."

Sloan said SET officers served a search warrant on the home of Cesar" Thumper" Muñoz, 29, an alleged member of the Lima Street gang, after getting information that Muñoz was selling the flavored methamphetamine known in the Sacramento area and now Carson City as "strawberry quick."

Flavored methamphetamine is the newest metamorphosis of the dangerous street drug made from ephedrine and toxic chemical such as lye and battery acid. It appears that the flavor and color were added to the meth during the cooking process, instead of afterward, which would mean the drug does not have any less potency than its common counterpart.

Methamphetamine can be ingested by snorting, smoking, or injecting.

Sloan said the "strawberry quick" methamphetamine is popular among new users who snort it because the flavoring can cut down on the taste. He said teenagers, who have been taught meth is bad, may see this flavored version as less harmful.

"This is designed for the younger crowd. If (dealers) can get younger people using it, they can get long-time buyers," he said.

"This stuff is new to us," Sloan said.

Muñoz allegedly sold 2 grams of "strawberry quick," in crystal form, to a SET informant. Sloan said no other drugs were found during a search of Muñoz's apartment. He was charged with sales, delivery and transport of a controlled substance, and remained in custody Sunday on a $20,000 bail.

SET will continue to work undercover in an attempt to stem the sale and use of methamphetamine in Carson City, Sloan said. Since Jan. 1, 117.3 grams of methamphetamine and 28.3 grams of marijuana have been seized, and more than a dozen people have been arrested in similar SET operations.

Anyone with information on "strawberry quick" or methamphetamine sales or use is asked to call the Meth Hotline at 887-2020, ext. METH; or Sloan at 887-2020, ext. 3174.

Coming to a schoolyard near you.

And strawberry isn't the only flavor being targeted at kids:

This madness will continue until we start to treat drug dealers like the murderers that they are.

The problem is the funding for anti-drug & treatment programs. Get rid of it, and druggies will think twice about wrecking their bodies knowing that their medical care won’t be paid for.

[Get rid of it, and druggies will think twice about wrecking their bodies ]

The poison cited in the subject article is made to taste like candy - to be consumed by children.

This is a weapon of mass destruction - aimed at our children.

The vast majority of meth in the US today is being imported via Mexico.

They're not only murders, they are terrorists; targeting a WMD against our children.

People should be outraged.

The title you created "DEA: Flavored meth use on the rise" was not the published title. It had to be changed. Please do not change the title of any published material.

Also, an article like this, dated from January 2007 does not belong on front page.

Sorry I don't buy the children angle. The flavoring of the drug is probably used to mask the taste of the drug. A drug like meth has got to taste like the crap boiling away in a Bunsen burner. I don't see meth dealers giving it to children as children don't have money. Of course, if they do, then they should be shot on sight.

If you want to stop this drug, you need to kill the demand for it. Stop letting methheads go to the ER and using Medicaid to get treated, they'll get the hint and stop using the drug. There's already harsh penalties for producing meth, hell you can't even buy cough syrup without 2 forms of ID now. But you cannot repeal the law of supply and demand.

I originally intended to post this article,

“DEA: Flavored meth use on the rise”
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-25-flavored-meth_N.htm

but not allowed because of USAToday

I forgot to change the title when posting the alternate article. Apologies for the mistake.

[Also, an article like this, dated from January 2007 does not belong on front page.]

I disagree. Our attention has been diverted and it SHOULD have been on Frontpage in January.

Meanwhile meth is a scourge that is decimating our heartland.

I live in Reno (30 mins North of Carson City). I’m a parent of small children as well as a foster parent. As a foster parent we are trained on all the new drugs on the street (particulary since most of the kids in care right now have parents addicted to meth or have been exposed in some way - even the newborns).

The new strawberry meth is insidiously dangerous because it’s already found it’s way to elementary school campuses in our area. It seems that there may be some kids in elementary school with parents or older siblings who deal. They give out (not sell) the “candy” to the very young in order to ensare them early. Nothing like securing future business.

It has gotten so bad that NO candy is permitted on school grounds (outside of a supervised classroom party). If anyone is caught eating or giving out any kind of candy on the playground or around school property, they’ll be hauled in.

The strawberry meth looks like a pink Jolly Rancher candy. They even have it on “a stick”, so you can eat it like a sucker. It’s vile and sickening. I get the pleasure of helping to pick up the pieces of the shattered little lives this addiction causes.

Unfortunately, Washoe County has now because the Meth Capital of the US. We’ve practically lost a whole generation of parents to Meth over here.

I have seen teenage kids on P-Methamphetamine, and it ain’t pretty.

And of course you are right: their pushers ought to be publicly hanged.

[Hmmm...]

Pretty pathetic isn’t it.

Maybe it’s because the amount of money involved provides a mighty temptation for small town LEO’s (or maybe LEOINO’s) to look the other way.

Now you stop that racist bigot talk. You are insulting our friendly neighbors to the south. We must give them what they want. Our Gubmint says so.

It’s also become common with cocaine, especially vanilla flavoured from what i hear.

They are saying that cocaine use in hollywood etc is at an all time high, not surprising at all. I can almost notice it 75% of the time on late night talk shows. It’s the one drug where you can almost come off as ‘normal’ to others, in small amounts anywya. not chatterboxing/grinding your teeth amounts. Meth is just sh*t, period.

how about some flavoured cigarettes over here?

~~~~~~~~~~~
Are you kidding me? They don’t think twice about anything. They do what they do regardless. You could enact a death penalty for posession of drugs and they would go right ahead and keep doing it.
