State Sen. Kay Hagan said Tuesday she is "looking into" a run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Elizabeth Dole.
The Greensboro Democrat's name has been raised frequently by political analysts in the past nine months as a potential contender. However, this is the first time Hagan herself has directly addressed the possibility of challenging Dole, who faces re-election in 2008.
Until now, Hagan has been circumspect in talking about a potential run, saying during this year's legislative term that she was focused on completing the state budget.
On Tuesday, Hagan said Dole is "vulnerable" to a challenge.
"I guarantee you, I wouldn't be thinking about this if I didn't think she was," Hagan said. "She's definitely vulnerable. I don't think she's in North Carolina very much, and I couldn't tell you a thing she's done for North Carolina."
Hagan said she would make a final decision on whether to run "sooner rather than later."

Elizabeth Dole’s approval numbers have been less than stellar. While this remains a second-tier race, it’s not a sure thing.
With all due respect, can anyone tell us just what Elizabeth Dole has accomplished in her time in the Senate?
Her voting record has been good, more conservative than was expected.

If Kay Hagan runs, the race may get ink due to two credible female candidates running against each other, which isn’t common. And free press usually benefits the challenger.

You make a good point. If she was a “maverick” she would be getting all sorts of lionizing press.
No scandals either.
Alas, nowadays that alone makes for a stellar republican senate performance.
I never trust anyone named Hagan, since there are lots of them in Ohio and they are all nasty ‘rats.
I’m far more interested in the Gubernatorial contest. By the next election, it will have been 24 years since Jim Martin was first elected Governor, and the state is long overdue for a Republican to lead it, especially after all the ghastly rodent scandals.
Elizabeth Dole kept her mouth shut and her eyes averted while the biggest civil rights scandal since Scottsboro was going on, right in her home state—the Duke Lacrosse fraud.
And she STILL won’t call for a federal civil rights investigation.
How is she any different from the southern senators before her who always kept their mouths shut when they saw a civil rights denial and unequal protection of the laws?
Um that would be exactly nothing.
Oh yes Jim Martin. Please let's have another one of him....not. Mind you I'm not a fan of Easley, Black, or any of the others we've had of late and the criminal activity they went through to pass the tax on the stupid (lottery) was bad but it would be nice to see a conservative instead of a Republican who feels the necessity to appeal solely to transplants

Yeah, you are right. She did nothing. Except play a pivotal role in stopping amnesty.
That alone, in my book, gives her a reason to stay.
Maybe she should make a run for president. Until John Kerry ran, people had largely forgotten he was still there.
I could only dream of forgetting Senator Seat Belt was my ‘representation’ in Congress.
At this point, I’m not sure who would be the best candidate for Governor, but one thing is clear, we need not extend the rodent control for another 8 years with Bev Perdue.
Elizabeth Dole is going to be reelected easily 60-40 at least!
Her votes against Amnesty sealed her Senate Seat (than also being the former seat of Mr. Jesse Helms too..).
Hey some people that moved from out-of state actually LIKE it here (in NC), and are familiar with the culture (want it preserved)-are not liberals..far from it! Like me :)..
