Rather: Government Influencing Newsrooms

Dan Rather said Thursday that the undue influence of the government and large corporations over newsrooms spurred his decision to file a $70 million lawsuit against CBS and its former parent company.

"Somebody, sometime has got to take a stand and say democracy cannot survive, much less thrive with the level of big corporate and big government interference and intimidation in news," he said on CNN's "Larry King Live."

In the suit, filed a day earlier in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, Rather claimed CBS and Viacom Inc. used him as a "scapegoat" and intentionally botched the aftermath of a discredited story about President Bush's military service to curry favor with the White House. He was removed from his "CBS Evening News" post in March 2005.

"They sacrificed support for independent journalism for corporate financial gain, and in so doing, I think they undermined a lot at CBS News," he told King.

Rather didn't mention other instances in which he believed news organizations bowed to corporate and government pressure.

This sad man has proved that he will go to any length to back one party while looking us in the eye and telling us how fair he is.

He can’t be trusted, and it must eat at him everyday that he has been proven a liar and a hack and that he no longer has any importance.

Dan, we never were that stupid, and you have always been a fool. I would think it would be fun to watch you discredit yourself, but your act got old many years ago, please join Walter at the home for wothless newscasters.

“He’s right about governments influencing the MSM. But it’s not ours. It’s his friends at Al Jazeera, and other America hating governments that are doing it. His colleagues depict us as the villians on a daily basis.”

Speaking of that, I am growing extremely sick of every bin Laden video that our MSM salivates over airing. If our media wouldn’t give binny a stage, he would eventually fade away.

Face it, the MSM in America are traitors.

Still trying to cover for his own lies and misdeeds...and somehow profit from it in the mean time. What an arrogant, sniveling, lieing, cheat and scoundrel he is.

What is Democratic about the Big News media producing lies and half truths to purposely swing elections? Dan Rather got caught in his lie, he didn’t care if the story was verifiable only that it would hurt President Bush. Yet not one story about the traitorous activities of Kerry who met with the enemy and slandered his fellow soldiers from this . They were letting him run as a War Hero! It is like letting Stalin run as a humanitarian and they still don’t understand why that anti-war reject didn’t win!

If we’d had a real machine going against him he’d have been taken down to the level of a McGovern who failed to win the Presidency with only 38% to Nixon’s 60% but alas Republicans still have a desire to play nice with those who do not deserve it. It was left up to independent organizations like the Swift boats to keep that atrocity out of the White House. If it hadn’t been for us here at Freerepublic and others independently responding and denying Rather and his cronies their jollies with Bush we would’ve probably had a Kerry Presidency.

This is not new for Rather. I remember him spouting this
paranoid self defensive trash in a televised interview a couple of years ago.

"democracy cannot survive, much less thrive with the level of big corporate and big government interference and intimidation in news," he said."

And what evidence do you have Gunga Dan, of this?
Actually, the only regret I have about this whole episode, is that it would have been fun to watch (repeats) of Dan coming totally unglued on the air on one of his news casts.

I watched a few seconds of it, but was laughing so hard I didn’t hear anything. Just the sight of crazy, senile Larry having a big talk with crazy, senile Dan had me LOL.

"Somebody, sometime has got to take a stand and say democracy cannot survive, much less thrive with the level of big corporate and big government interference and intimidation in news,"

I was in trade publishing for more than 10 years, which is alleged by "real journalists" of the MSM (especially by blowhards like Dan Rather) to be the black sheep of the publishing family, mostly due to the alleged influence of advertisers.

In truth, most of the folks I worked with had some kind of "real" news background, and many had been journo majors and even graduate students from well-known journo schools. To a man, they were deeply and occasionally emotionally opposed to even a hint of advertiser influence. It just didn't happen. When it was even remotely suspected, there would be an uproar of protest by the entire staff. Even a a whiff of influence would send telephone books, Rolodexes, and stacks of press releases flying across the bullpen in anger.

So I am going to assert (based on the above and on knowing lots of "real" jounos as well) that Rather is lying though his teeth. While we all agree that journos do in fact carve their reporting and stories in accordance with their personal and collective ideological stances, Rather's charge is the most profoundly unimaginable insult to his own profession and certainly to his former CBS colleagues.

IMO this reflects VERY badly on Rather and his eagerness to make slanderous wholesale charges against those he once worked with. There is no doubt that he is this week the most despised and disrespected person on earth within the network news profession.

Or when Billy Jeff had a whole team of army “communications personnel" in the CNN newsroom while Weasely Clark was bombing the chit out of Serbia.

Dan Rather said Thursday that the undue influence of the government and large corporations over newsrooms...

We've all known that the Democrats in government have a huge influence on the MSM news and how it's presented, but we always thought both were happily working for a common socialist/communist goal.

Oh yeah, the ABCNNBCBS, NYTimes and LATimes really march to the government's tune.

Right.

Just a measure of how far left this turd it. You can only imagine what the liberal press would report if he had his way.

Mr. Blather, the foundation for your rationale is flawed. Please take responsibility for your and corporate CBS’ actions in your self-created quagmire!!!
