The U.S. Senate voted this morning to express its support for Gen. David Petreaus, commander of United States forces in Iraq, and to condemn MoveOn.org for its New York Times ad last week calling him "General Betray Us." Critics have said the ad bordered on traitorous.
But 25 Democrats, including Ohio's Sherrod Brown, voted against the Senate amendment.
MoveOn helped Brown raise $287,623 for his election last year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
In a news conference this morning, President Bush called the ad "disgusting," adding, "I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democratic Party spoke out more strongly against that kind of ad."
UPDATE: While Brown voted against the amendment condemning MoveOn for its anti-Petreaus ad, he voted for a Democratic alternative that condemned all attacks on service members, past and present.
The difference?
The alternative included condemnations of past attacks on veterans including former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia and current Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate.
"Senator Brown voted for the amendment defending the patriotism of all men and women in uniform, past and present, including General Petreaus, Senator Cleland, and Senator Kerry," said a statement from Brown spokeswoman Bethany Lesser. "There were two amendments; one that condemned a special interest group, and one that condemned attacks on members of the military. Senator Brown voted to support all of our troops."
Republicans see a distinction: Kerry and Cleland were criticized long after their service, in the midst of political campaigns. Petreaus is in the midst of a war, however unpopular, right now.
The alternative amendment failed, with only two Republicans voting for it: Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.
Granted that she was running against a RINO Doofus, but I still couldn't see the appeal. At least the Soros sock-puppet elected over here had a pedigree.
What’s appropriate now is an ad depicting these 25 Liberal traitors as exactly that anti-American, anti-military sleaze. IMO, the Administration has sucked up these traitors’ dirty tactics for the past seven years. It’s way past time to use their tactics on them.

Well said. I share your thoughts. This is EXACTLY what needs to be done. Major ads in every major newspaper in America. How about throwing in a little background information on those behind MOVEON?
Our knucklehead chorus sings again.
Absolutely correct!
His.
A socialist to the core.
Yea, he is not as open as Bernie Sanders but they buy their hammer and sickle from the same store.

Chafee’s gone, Hagel’s gone, Specter and Graham ought to be next.
Hey George, you are being adversarial with the democrats. Can't we all just get along? Sheesh!
My bad. Brown is a him. So he can at least be the dumbest member of the senate with a penis now that Mark Dayton has retired?
Our Senator from Ohio is an embarassment for this state. During his campaign, he used Al Franken as a guest speaker for a conference call for those supporters caring to join in.
We all have our embarrassments. I live in Illinois and have two of them. Durbin/Obama.
My deepest and sincere condolences.
He did vote for Boxer’s amendment condemning the ad, but Republicans were far too hypocritical to vote for that one. I guess these sorts of ads are ok when they do it....
The left is trying to say that what moveon did was no different than what the swift boat vets did to kerry. There’s a huge difference though,Petraus is a hero and kerry is a cowardly traitor bastard.
There is a HUGE difference....moveon.org attacked an active duty general who is running the war in Iraq. The attacks on Kerry, Bush, and others were in the context of a political run for office.
Typical dem/lib media spin that there is no difference between the two. As for Mr. Obama’s statement that he didn’t participate in the vote because of whatever, he DID vote on the Boxer amendment, so his words are as hollow as he is.
And you think the attacks on Cleland were warranted, too?
Republicans were just outnumbered and outvoted in Ohio last year.
