CNN.com, USAToday.com Bury Coverage of 'Jena 6' Beating Victim
NewsBusters.org ^ | 9/20/2007 | Matthew Balan

Posted on 09/20/2007 2:17:13 PM PDT by Pyro7480

The websites of CNN and USAToday joined their "Big Three" network brethren in covering the march in Jena, Louisiana to support the so-called Jena 6, while at the same time, either burying mention of the teenager who was beaten by the six high school students, or not mentioning him at all.

CNN.com’s report, in which CNN correspondents Susan Roesgen, Tony Harris, Kyra Philips and Eliott McLaughlin were contributors, didn’t mention Justin Barker until the twenty-second paragraph of the story.

The teens were initially charged with attempted murder after they allegedly knocked out Justin Barker -- a white classmate -- while stomping and kicking him during a school fight on December 4, 2006.

Barker was taken to a hospital with injuries to both eyes and ears as well as cuts. His right eye had blood clots, said his mother, Kelli Barker.

Before this, the report focused entirely on the planned march in support of the so-called Jena 6.

CNN followed the report on the victim with a statement from the local district attorney in Louisiana.

LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters urged the world not to forget the victim in the case.

"The injury done to him and threats to his survival have become less than a footnote," Walters said Wednesday.

"This case has not, never has been about race. It's about finding justice for an innocent victim, holding people accountable for their actions. That is what it's about," he said.

USAToday.com’s report on the march, written by Marisol Bello, did not mention Justin Barker at all, but focused exclusively on the march and the prosecution of one of the teenagers charged in the beating.

Six grown teenagers stomping and kicking one is not a “fight”. It’s assault and battery at least, and attempted murder at most, depending on the degree of injury. The “Jena 6” sound like a cowardly bunch of thugs, no matter what the alleged provocation.

Yeah, even the one thug who had been convicted didn't deny the incident. He and his mom just thought the prosecutor went "overboard" with the charges.

Now, with the rally, you have a bunch of busybodies who are saying "Free the Jena 6!" Really? Even though they beat up the guy?

“I’ve already been given slack for my comments about this at topix.net

No shock there. A gal who traveled from LA to Jena to “help promote
social justice” got her 30 seconds of fame this morning on CNN.
No mention of the real actual facts of the crime...just many
victim-industry professionals, camp-followers and CNN “journalists”
seem to be the totality of what “Jena” is about now.

(friendly suggestion.....I suspect you meant “flak”, not “slack”)

I was just fuming watching that crap this morning...constant scrolls talking about a "fight" but like you say...6 on 1 is a BEATING.....

did CNN or MSNBS even talk about the victim, his injuries, or how at least one of the "children"..yes, one reporter used the word children to describe the thugs...had a nice size criminal portfolio already?....of course not....

Not surprising. Let Maxine and Conyers and the other hate mongers require the local DA to go up and testify before Congress. I hope he does, and brings big photographs of the victim.

I was surprised some of the written “news” stories actually mention the rallies are in support of these kids who attacked another student. Right there in the first paragraph they are saying these moron protesters are *defending* known violent criminals. That says it all.

The DA didn't charge the three white students because Louisiana didn't have a specific law against hanging up a noose. While the act was despicable and should have been roundly condemned, the black students still shouldn't have resorted to violence. All this does is marginalize them even more & so-called black "leaders" such as Jackson and Sharpton.

I recognize that it will take a long long time before these incidents result in a white backlash, but it will come. I say that sadly, racial conflict is among the most devastating things that can happen to a society.

Whites are projected to become less than a majority. As that happens, whites are going to start reacting to all the laws, protests, etc designed to aid blacks but not whites. As hispanic numbers increase, and blacks realize the democrats abandoned blacks to bring in a larger group of voters, tensions will increase.

This is all why a race-blind society was needed, but the liberals have adopted a radical racial approach. If you look into the racial ideology of most of these liberal groups, they support the belief that whites are inherently racist and that racial conflict must continue forever.

The media sounds as if it wants to send the message that blacks should get a pass when they attack a white person.

There were no demonstrations when a punter Mitch Cozad was charged with attempted murder of his rival Mendoza (who was not nearly as seriously hurt as the Jenna victim) even though the consensus was that the DA overcharged. IIRC, the jury found him guilty of a lesser charge.

Unless of course the kid was gay—then there would be a whole new spin on the story. The six attackers and the attackee would be on equal “Victim Footing.” So there would be a level playing field and we might actually see the six attackers be held accountable for beating someone.

Thousands Rally in Louisiana to Support Jena 6
School_Fight

By MARY FOSTER
Associated Press Writer

Posted: Today at 8:57 a.m.

JENA, La. — Thousands of chanting demonstrators filled the streets of this little Louisiana town Thursday in support of six black teenagers initially charged with attempted murder in the beating of a white classmate.

The crowd broke into chants of “Free the Jena Six” as the Rev. Al Sharpton arrived at the local courthouse with family members of the jailed teens.

Martin Luther King III, son of the slain civil rights leader, said the scene was reminiscent of earlier civil rights struggles. He said punishment of some sort may be in order for the six defendants, but “the justice system isn’t applied the same to all crimes and all people.”

(snip)

Red Cross officials manned first aid stations near the local courthouse and had water and snacks available. Portable toilets and flashing street signs to aid in traffic direction were in place. At the courthouse, troopers chatted amiably with each other and with demonstrators who began showing up well before dawn.

This case seems kind of odd. If they did it, they are guilty; if they didn’t do it, they are not guilty. Why is this case a cause celebre? Everyone deserves fair treatment under the law. If that fair treatment was infringed or denied, action must be taken against law enforement. If that fair treatment was provided, somebody needs to tell the assembled protesters to ‘go blow!’

Niger Innis from CORE was on Fox & Friends this morning discussing the case. He thought the attempted murder charge was excessive, claiming the victim went to a party that evening (as if he wasn’t badly hurt in the attack). I don’t know what the facts are.

Its just the way things are. I think its important to understand that but to treat each person you meet individually.

That said I was in a bar watching Southlake Carroll vs. Miami, the #1 and #2 highschools in the nation. Southlake Carroll is mostly white and in Texas while Miami is mostly black and from Florida. In the bar every black person (I live in a Dallas suburb) was rooting for Miami. It was weird how much tension there was since this wasn't a black Texas school vs. a white one, it was Texas vs. Florida. I am sure it helped that USA Today had an article informing the nation why we should hate Southlake Carroll (supposedly someone from Southlake said their kids were better students, better athletes and better looking than everyone elses kids)> I wondered why we, as a nation, should hate a consistently great highschool football team. Their sin is not just being white but also being well off.

The notion that attempted murder has to do with how close you come to killing the person is absurd. The question is, were you intending to kill the person? You could shoot at someone and totally miss them and they could dance at their edding that day. You're still an attempted murderer.

Now, maybe the charge was excessive here because they did not intend to kill, and the charge has been dropped. But six kids stomping one kid unconscious is a damn serious incident.

In the big scheme of things, the liberal media has trounced any sense of true morality or proper conduct based on religion. After that, it’s just a free for all as to who should be today’s hated villain, maybe because they are rich, or successful, black or white. There is no overriding code of -dare I say it - Christian or Judeo Christian principles.

"The teens were initially charged with attempted murder after they allegedly knocked out Justin Barker -- a white classmate -- while stomping and kicking him during a school fight on December 4, 2006."-CNN

If 6 whites attacked a single black and beat him into unconsciousness, would CNN and MSM call it a "fight"? This wasn't a "fight", it was a vicious assault.

"....He thought the attempted murder charge was excessive, claiming the victim went to a party that evening (as if he wasn’t badly hurt in the attack). I don’t know what the facts are."

The victim was beaten unconscious. While he was unconscious, the 'Jena 6' continued to kick and stomp him in the head until they were forced to stop.

Let's say someone attempted to shoot one of any of the so called 'black leaders' while he was sleeping, by emptying a pistol at him, but missed every time, then was forced to leave before he could reload and finish the job. Now the said unharmed 'leader' was able to go to a function that same night, isn't it still attempted murder?

Repeatedly kicking and stomping on the head of an unconscious person, isn't trying to send a message to that person, it's a repeated attempt to do serious damage to a person who can't defend himself, and is at the mercy of his attackers, who by their very actions had no intentions of showing mercy.

Racially integrated high schools have long been very dangerous places for white students. They have just become more dangerous: the MEDIA Establishment has decided that it’s OK for a vicious gang of black kids to stage a racially motivated attack on a defenseless white student—such racial lynching is defined as a “fight.” The media has also decreed that it’s NOT OK to arrest or charge the savages who carried out this attack. If those assailants are black. Can you IMAGINE the tone the coverage would have taken if the assailants were white and their victim black?

1. Did anyone see exactly who put the nooses in the tree?

2. Was the student who was beaten one of the students who put up the nooses?

In some of the discussions I have listened to this information has not been clear. If you know, thanks.

1. Did anyone see exactly who put the nooses in the tree?

An investigation was held, and the students responsible were suspended.

2. Was the student who was beaten one of the students who put up the nooses?

No, the reports say there is no connection between the two incidents.

It's frustrating how the news media (including FoxNews) is not telling all of the details.

Beating can’t be justified.

BUT what preceded the beating was that the shade under a tree in the schoolyard was declared OFF LIMITS TO BLACKS by a group of white teens. They hung NOOSES from the tree to intimidate the black teens.

This was a school yard bunch of white kids that were no damned good.

Nevertheless the beating was not the answer but at the time I read the victim had recovereed enough from his injuries to “attend a school function’ that night.

Nothing is as simple as it looks. There are no good guys here,,just a bunch of teenagers acting like bubbas and a bunch of black kids that got fed up.

I've also been wondering if the kid who was beaten unconscious was known to have been involved in previously antagonizing the black students (whether or not he had anything to do with the nooses--presumably whoever did that is staying anonymous), or if he was just targeted for being white.

If the situation was reveresed, six white kids beating a black kid unconscious, it would have been a hate crime. Instead, it's a learning experience for the media to remind everyone of existential white guilt.

I hope this is the 'Jump The Shark' moment for race pimps Sharpton & Jackson.

We regularly read about black on white crimes motivated by their own rasism and routinely see the story ignored or downplayed or even justified as in the case in Jena.

Next time there is a "Duke 6" , I hope there will a Civil Rights march that I can attend!

How surprising that no CNN reporter asked Al about the Duke boys and the injustice there!

Yes, nothing is as simple as it looks:

...

Mychal Bell, now 17, is the only one of the defendants to be tried. He was convicted of aggravated second-degree battery, but his conviction was tossed last week by a state appeals court that said Bell, who was 16 at the time of the beating, could not be tried as an adult on that charge.

Bell had been arrested on juvenile charges including battery and criminal damage to property, and was on probation at the time Barker was beaten. He remained in jail pending an appeal by prosecutors. An appellate court on Thursday ordered a hearing to be held within three days on his request for release. The other five defendants are free on bond.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,297547,00.html

One of the reasons the one kids was tried as an adult.

You can’t possibly be naieve enough to believe this was a GENTLE beating into unconsciousness. SIX angry black kids against ONE WHITE KID? LOL! This was BRUTAL.

BTW, you may want to see what the white victim, who had NOTHING to do with the nooses - an UGLY PRANK - not a PHYSICAL BEATING had to say:

Teen Testifies on Alleged Race Beating
Wednesday, June 27, 2007

By MARY FOSTER, Associated Press Writer

Justin Barker, 17, testified that he had just come out of his high school gym with his girlfriend walking ahead of him on Dec. 4 when they turned to avoid a group of black students.

“I turned my back and somebody hit me, that’s all I remember,” Barker said.

...

Ten white high school students appeared on the witness stand. Some said Bell was the one who struck Barker, others said they could not identify the person who knocked Barker down but that the attacker wore a green hooded jacket. The last of the 10, Jacob Hooter, said the person who struck Barker wore a red shirt. Hooter said Bell was present, but he did not see Bell hit or kick Barker.

Barker said he had a badly swollen face and temporary blindness in one eye that lasted three weeks. He also said he still suffers recurring headaches since the beating but, under cross-examination, acknowledged that medical tests have found no cause.

He joined fellow juniors at the school’s annual class ring ceremony the night he was beaten. “I waited 11 years to go to it. I wasn’t going to let that get in my way,” he said. But, he said, pain drove him to leave the event early, after getting his ring.

http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jun27/0,4670,SchoolFight,00.html

Yes, DO minimize the beating to suit your racist agenda!

Those insulted by the nooses had every right to file criminal charges and they did not:

Racial tensions in Jena _ a town of 2,900 with about 350 black residents _ were raised in September when high school students found three nooses hanging from a tree on campus. A black student had sat under the tree, traditionally used by white students as a gathering spot.

Three white students were suspended, but no criminal charges were filed.

http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jun27/0,4670,SchoolFight,00.html

These are low down kids using a thug mentality to justify beating of an innocent kid - six to one and they have the perverted nerve to ask for these thugs to be “freed”. That’s not the kind of justice this country stands for. It’s O.J. Simpson all over again.
