Kathmandu (dpa) - The ambassadors from European Union member countries and EU representatives based in Nepal Thursday said they were disappointed over the withdrawal of the Maoists from the country's interim government.
Issuing a statement, the ambassadors and representatives said the scheduled elections in November must be held on time and failure to do so will damage the credibility of the peace process.
``If the elections cannot be held on time with the full support of all parties, this will be a betrayal of the people's aspirations and damage the credibility of the peace process in their eyes and in the eyes of the international community,'' the statement said. The EU reaction came two days after the Maoists quit the government after coalition members rejected their demands for the immediate abolition of monarchy and announced protests to disrupt elections.
The November election will choose a constituent assembly that will rewrite the country's new constitution and decide on the future of the monarchy.
``These elections are about securing peace and democracy in Nepal,'' the EU ambassadors said. ``They are in fulfilment of promises made to the Nepali people that they will be able to decide their own future through a fully representative and inclusive Constituent Assembly and begin building a lasting peace and prosperous future.''
They urged parties concerned to resolve their differences quickly and peacefully and find a common ground to ensure the elections are held, as planned, on November 22.
Despite their pull-out from the government, the Maoists remain in the parliament and have said they will abide by the agreement reached with the political parties.
The Maoists joined the government on April 1, nearly four months after signing a peace deal with the government, ending a decade-long conflict in which nearly l5,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced
They might be Maoist, but all countries should pull out of the EU.
Communism is incompatable with democracy. Communists don’t vote, they kill.
We may disagree with their methods, but their aim, abolishion of the monarchy should be the goal of every freedom loving Freeper. Monarchy in the form they have is just dictatorship wrapped in a pleasant looking package..
I don’t know enough about Nepalese culture to know if they would enslave themselves by voting for communist leaders if given the right to vote, but I do know that their current monarch is much better and preferable than a communist government.
The Maoists are just death squads repackaged in the pleasant looking clothes of democracy.
