writing to the person who opposes you has little affect -
write to the newspaper, repeatedly.

In my experience, writing letters to his office has no real effect, because he believes that any negative response to his efforts comes from criminals, not the majorityThe problem is that these jerkoffs are NOT elected, but appointed. You have to change their elected bosses and then get them kicked out there isn't any point in trying to change their minds, because they are 100% in the enemy camp. You couldn't change Sara Brady upChuckie Schemer's minds etc. You won't change these jerks' minds either.

If only they could keep an eye on those pesky guns.
What do convicted murderers get now, 8 years on average?
80% of violent crimes are committed by ex-cons. Why don’t they try to keep track of them?

The Constitution says you cant take my stuff until a court rules that I have committed an unlawful act justifying such a course of action.
tell that to whomever made the decision that if you've ever had a restraining order taken out against you, you can't own a gun.

All non-felony convicted American citizens should be allowed to own and carry the same type of guns or weaponry that law enforcement carries. The felony convicted ones considered on a case-by-case basis.

Re: "Im not sure they mean very much."
I live in Crook County, IL. I can tell you it is not joke. Outside of SanFransico, Chicago is the nation's most damaging anti-gun liberal mill. The County has baned assault weapons. Morton Grove, IL was the historic in banning handguns. Mayor Daley violates privacy of gun owner registration. Liberal lap dogs like "Rev" Jessie Jackass and Rev. Michael Pfleger calling for violent uprisings against gun shops. To top it off, we have a RINO legislators to aid and abet the enemies. As a region, we have liberal Milwaukee, Gary and Springfield on our flanks.
Yeah, they mean it.

The IACP has never and will never represent what the beat cop opinion of this has been in the past. They are a purely political group who know that funding for them will increase if they kiss the butts of certain congress critters.
Your best avenue is to get the local officers on the beat to refute this, write letters to the paper, get people informed about how this will be a black eye on the Bill of Rights.
Above all, let the chief know his job is to protect the citizenry, not campaign.

Conferences such as this are the vaudeville of would-be political entertainers; its mostly greasepaint and slapstick, and Im not sure they mean very much. Even if in their minds they do not really intend to follow through on such speeches they damage the public perception of public ownership of firearms.
They also reinforce the opinions of anti-gun activist. They identify themselves to the anti-gun activist as an ally. The anti-gun activist then publicize them as a anti-gun public figure.
Then if the time should come that these politicians should run for office they have little choice but to continue there anti-gun stance because their grass roots supporters and financial benefactors expect them to be anti-gun and anyone else who may have been a supporter would not believe after their years of anti-gun speeches that suddenly they are pro-gun.
They have little choice but to push anti-gun legislation if elected.

POLICE CHIEFS, BIPARTISAN MEMBERS OF CONGRESS CALL FOR NEW APPROACH TO REDUCING GUN VIOLENCE Funny thing, I see nothing new here, they're still trying to ban guns or at least make it very difficult for law abiding citizens to legally own them.

This is what my local police chief considers to be his "work" and I believe it effects us all (gun owners, freedom lovers, etc.) What should I do?
Chief of Police is a political position, the only real way to change his stance is to a elect pro-gun mayor and city council. They can then order him to moderate his stance or replace him.
