DC. . The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the worlds largest association of law enforcement executives, today called on Congress and the Administration, as well as state and local governments, to support strong and effective gun violence prevention policies, and to provide law enforcement with the resources necessary to reverse a two-year rise in violent crime.
The IACP unveiled a set of nearly 40 recommendations for policymakers, police, and community and philanthropic leaders which are the result of the Great Lakes Summit on Gun Violence.
The summit, held in Chicago earlier this year, was a groundbreaking collaboration of 200 law enforcement and elected officials and public health experts to develop a cooperative approach to reduce gun related crime and violence.
Every day, police officers are putting their lives on the line to protect their communities from well-armed criminals, said Scott M. Knight, Chief of the Chaska, Minnesota Police Department and chair of the IACPs Firearms Committee. But we cant fight this battle alone. We need elected officials to make the fight to reduce gun violence a priority, and that means giving police the resources and the policies we need to win. The recommendations in the report Taking a Stand: Reducing Gun Violence in Our Communities ..(snip)... Specific proposals include:
requiring that all gun sales take place through federally licensed dealers;
enhancing the ability of law enforcement to use federal gun trace data to deter illegal trafficking;
removing all firearms and ammunition from batterers when law enforcement responds to domestic violence calls;
restoring funding to the COPS program, an extremely effective crime fighting programs that has broad support within the law enforcement community; and, mandating safe storage of firearms by private citizens.

What should I do?
In my experience, writing letters to his office has no real effect, because he believes that any negative response to his efforts comes from criminals, not the majority.
Talk to your next door neighbor. If he doesn't agree with your view, convince him. If not, try the next neighbor until one agrees. Then both of you will go to the next neighbor to see if they will join, or need to be convinced. Hopefully three of you will go on talking to the next neighbor...
I really get tired of these people.
“New approach” = more gun laws. Hey govt, how about just arresting the criminals and keeping the violent ones in jail?
Well that makes sense to us anyway.
Hey gun owners, lock your guns up and keep them unloaded. They’ll be a very big help when you need them to save your life...
If these guys are that terrified of armed citizens, then they should step down and let someone else pick up the shield.
They want to be safe, but screw me if I want to be.
The irony. What's worse is this guy has an R.
Ummm, hello? Anybody home? How about locking up criminals using handguns in a crime and leaving the law-abiding citizens alone?
Hello? Hello?
...[crickets]...
Yep. They do everything except punish the criminal.
Maybe we shouldn't worry. Once they make us all criminals, they'll leave us alone...
I guess these police chief never heard these words before.
nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law
The Constitution says you cant take my stuff until a court rules that I have committed an unlawful act justifying such a course of action.
If the guy/gal is a batter arrest the violent individual and put them in jail. If the violent individual gets out on bail (more than likely) the victim may need the guns and ammo.
“Great Lakes Summit on Gun Violence.” — funded in part by the Joyce foundation. Imagine my surprise...
Anyone remember that NOLA chief just straight up saying “no one can have guns anymore” on live tv? Almost threw up. Look forward to that as the new approach.

“The Brady Campaign supports it”
Kirk Applauds Police Chiefs Gun and Gang Safety Report
Very rare is the Chief Smith nationwide who doesn’t harbor secret dreams of being Senator Smith, Congressman Smith, Attorney General Smith, and so on. Rather than remain occupied with law enforcement, many of these guys avail themselves of any opportunity to test the waters for future campaigns, develop their speaking skills, and polish public personae. Conferences such as this are the vaudeville of would-be political entertainers; it’s mostly greasepaint and slapstick, and I’m not sure they mean very much.
A political organization with members pushing their own agenda.
And we all can see just how safe Baltimore and DC are with strict gun laws.
Correct and I am a former cop
The International Association of Chiefs of Police are a bunch of self serving political hacks and DO NOT speak for the rank and file Law Enforcement Officer.
From another former COP.
Allowing private sales really screws up their efforts to build a registry.
This is why I infinitely prefer elected sheriffs over police chiefs appointed by political hacks.
Our sheriff ran on the platform of constitutional rights for the individual, especially an armed citizenry, and that he is the highest law enforcement authority in the county, bar none.
