When I was there 20 years ago, the houses we stayed in didn’t have central heat or showers (just tubs with handheld showerheads). And people thought we were weird for wanting to drink something cold, like fruit juice (not at breakfast).
Yes, but they were/are a rarity.
Most British homes had central heating by the 60’s,let alone the 80’s, and whilst some older homes still have just a bath and cheap handheld showerhead, most British homes DO have a shower or bath and shower.
Why want fruit juice when you can have a cup of tea?...lol
Seriously, we British have always loved our orange, pineapple and various fruit juices but until the 80’s, these were very much seen as a ‘summer thing’(orange juice being the possible exception). Tea, milk, or coffee were the year long staple liquid diet of Britain. Not that fruit juices werent available all year round, they were, it was just a cultural thing that come autumn then winter, you drank warmer drinks like the above and hot chocolate...
If you wanted orange, lime, pineapple juices etc etc outside of summer, most people drank ‘squash’ (concentrated fruit juice diluted with water) rather than the fruit juices themselves(now both are popular). These squash drinks could and can be drunk cold or hot.
