There are two categories of ‘Vietnam Veteran’ recognized by the Federal Government.

First, the ‘Vietnam Veteran’. To qualify you actually had to serve in Vietnam. Paul would not qualify.

Second, the ‘Vietnam Era Veteran’. To qualify you only had to be on active duty during Vietnam. Paul qualifies.

This distinction is lost on most people and I’ve seen numerous instances of media confusion on this point as well. Unless Paul has specifically called himself a ‘Vietnam Veteran’, I wouldn’t make a big deal out of this one.

To qualify you actually had to serve in Vietnam.

You had to serve in Southeast Asia to qualify for the Vietnam Campaign medal, not necessarily Vietnam.
