“Institutionalizing” children is a good way of putting it. There is no reason a first grader should be “chained” to their desk for hours and hours a day, when the entire day’s lessons could be done much more quickly with an adult paying more attention to them 1 on 1. Less pressure, more time to play.

Oh come now - how else can we cause ADD/ADHD/Bipoar if we don’t deny young children the ability to run around in the sunshine and play ? The pharmapsych industry would collapse.

No kidding. Formal school-time at our house is about an hour. The rest of the time it's outdoor activities, music, art, reading, etc... all leisure time activities that our 5 yr old son loves. When I come home in the evening he helps me in the garage (I am restoring a 1972 VW Bug). He doesn't realize it, but that is school too.
He only gets TV one day a week, and only for a an hour or so. His favorite show is the Discovery Channel's Planet Earth series, and he is smart enough to recognize that their Global Warming slant is BS.

Try all-day kindergarten. I believe in our district it's SEVEN hours per day for 5 year-olds. It was signed into law by our Democrat governor. The moms I know love it. :O(
