PARIS (AP) -- The McLaren team was fined $100 million and stripped of its points in the constructors' standings Thursday in the spying scandal that has rocked the sport
McLaren, which leads the current drivers' and constructors' standings, was punished by the World Motor Sports Council for allegedly using leaked secret technical documents belonging to F1 rival Ferrari.

Did you miss the Buffalo Bills’ NFL team being caught stealing info on the sidelines, and the pending sanctions to come?
Oops....Make that the New England Patriots, NOT the Buffalo Bills.
Yea what the heck if the Bills were doing that I as a fan would at least expect a playoff birth this decade..
I see that only the constructor’s points were taken away, and that the drivers get to keep their points. Alonso and Hamilton will obviously be happy about that. But if anything comes out showing that they knew what was going on, they should be docked too.
It also mentions a supposed sabotage attempt to sneak something into the Ferrari gas tanks.
Perhaps a variation of the OSS device that had a rolled-up condom filled with a powdered abrasive to be surreptitiously slipped in.
The beauty of that system was that it took time for the latex to dissolve and the abrasive was designed to work gradually, putting a massive amount of wear on the engine over a week’s time. Not easily diagnosed as sabotage and impossible to follow back.
At any rate, any sports scandal NOT involving drugs is noteworthy.
I was frankly surprised that what the Pats were doing was illegal. I thought trying to intercept signs was part of the game. Everybody uses and analyzes film, and I think this would be very hard to police.
Just how much money is in that sport that a company can afford $100 million dollar fines without declaring bankruptcy.
As if Ferrari and all the others don't do a little spying of their own?
"Spying" used to be called something totally different, in the good ol' days.
...*competition*. :o)
I think the budget for Ferrari is more than $500 million. I think the budgets for the tail-enders are about $50-60 million.
F-1
Don`t forget, the F stands for Ferrari and Ecclestone`s bias. :-(
100 million? seems harsh.
No.
McClaren will rue the loss of points more than the fine.
Enough that the top drivers used to think that Michael Jordan’s renumeration was chump change.
LOL
Well, consider yourself lucky.
The Cleveland Browns don't have signals for plays to steal, or if they do, they don't share them with THEIR OWN PLAYERS!
I can understand that.... I don’t pay much attention to the NFL anymore, either.
Holy Wah!
How can they survive this?
There is huge money in F1. McLaren could absorb this if they had to, but I would guess that they might actually have insurance to cover this sort of thing.
