Taliban Commander Detained During Afghan Operations

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10, 2007 – Afghan national police advised by coalition forces detained a Taliban district commander in an operation designed to disrupt insurgent activities in Ghazni province early this morning. Maulawi Ahmad Jan is known to be extensively involved in coordinating insurgent activities in the province. He has directed bombings and ambush attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region.

During a search of the commander’s compound, Afghan police discovered a weapons and ammunition cache.

“With Ahmad Jan now detained, Ghazni will be a less dangerous place,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “Information gained as a result of Ahmad Jan’s capture will undoubtedly result in further interdiction of Taliban fighters and leaders in the area.”

In other operations today, intelligence reports led Afghan and coalition forces to compounds suspected of housing members of the Taliban militant network in Ghazni province. One armed male was killed after ignoring verbal warnings and threatening coalition forces. Two suspected militants were wounded and detained in the operation. Both were provided on-site care following the operation. Weapons, ammunition and grenades were found in the area.

During a search of the commander’s compound, Afghan police discovered a weapons and ammunition cache. But was there probably cause to believe a  crime had been committed, and that there was evidence of that crime in the commander's compound? Is he not innocent until proven guilty? I'm sure the ACLU is looking into this issue.
