Herndon to Shut Down Center for Day Laborers (pushing out the illegal aliens)
The Washington Post ^ | Thursday, September 6, 2007 | Bill Turque

Posted on 09/06/2007 1:17:56 PM PDT by DesScorp

The Town of Herndon announced yesterday that it would close its 21-month-old day-laborer center next week instead of complying with a judge's ruling that the site must be open to all residents, including those who might be illegal immigrants.

The decision to close the site, which became a flash point in the national debate over immigration, was reached late Tuesday by Mayor Stephen J. DeBenedittis and the six-member Town Council after a 2 1/2 -hour closed-door session. It brings the western Fairfax community virtually full circle in its attempts to regulate -- critics say drive out -- its large population of Latino day laborers. The center was established in late 2005 as an alternative to the streets for laborers and prospective employers to come to terms.

Herndon's experience with the day-laborer center was a bellwether for towns across the country wrestling with national immigration issues. As other jurisdictions try to pass measures targeting illegal immigrants, yesterday's actions in Herndon indicate that courts, and not legislators, might have the ultimate say.

DeBenedittis said that the town has other means at its disposal, such as zoning and traffic ordinances, to accomplish its goals.

"There is no longer a need for the town to support a regulated day-labor site," he said.

The judge forced the town to let illegals use the site, so rather than allowing this to happen, they simply shut it down. Good for Herndon, and shame on that judge.

I'm probably misreading the situation but it sounds like the town wanted the day labor center to be used by illegals only.

Maybe this is a good tactic for the pro-border enforcement people to take - hang out with the illegals, earn un-reported income and use the ER for free.

'The Man' will go nuts.

Somebody help Me out here; I was always told that you could not use government resources (i.e., Food Stamps for one) when you applied for them unless you could prove you were (are a) Legal Resident. If someone is here ILLEGALLY, they can NOT be a ‘Legal’ Resident. How can this judge ignore that one requirement and issue that order?

“Deport them all I say, and do it today....”

You DO mean judges like this one right?

Why should “legal” immigrants get food stamps? They are supposed to have a sponsor before they come here who guarantees that they will not become a burden on the public.

No, illegal aliens, the judges should be impeached or voted out depending on how the judge came to his/her position....

It’s really too bad that we can’t easily impeach federal judges. Dictatorial powers plus lifetime tenure are a toxic mix.

I was not advocating that legal immigrants get food stamps, I was merely pointing out the illegality of the judge’s decision since government agencies are prohibited from providing services to non-residents. My sister applied for food stamps in the past and the first thing they asked her was for proof of residency.

I didn’t think you were advocating it - the thought just occurred to me.

In 1994 the Congressional Republican Revolution discussed such things, but in 1998 they caved in.

We are not making progress because now judges say illegal aliens are the same as citizens.

Can’t really find more current articles - maybe no one is investigating:

New Immigrants Masters at Food Stamp Fraud
Wednesday, November 27, 2002
Fox News

...Large scale food stamp fraud came to light in an explosive way in 1996, when authorities in Ohio discovered that a Jordanian man and his uncle had deposited $24 million in purchased food stamps in the bank accounts associated with their chain of food and video stores. Just before authorities descended on them with arrest warrants, they deeded their property over to their wives, which included $300,000 homes, and fled to Jordan.

(snip)

Food stamp fraud has taken on more sinister dimensions within the last year and a half. Last autumn, the FBI determined that the Somali asylee community in Seattle, set with food stamps and other forms of public assistance, was targeted by the Al-Barakaat Wire Transfer company, a wire transfer and hawala banking outfit with known connections to Al Qaeda. Al-Barakaat set up a storefront in Seattle and immediately went to work selling Qat, a mild narcotic popular with Somalis, and converting food stamps to money for Somalis to send back to their relatives in Somalia. The FBI believes Al-Barakaat skimmed tens of millions of dollars off of the proceeds of these two activities, and funneled it directly to Al Qaeda.

According to the testimony provided by New York City detectives to a U.S. Senate subcommittee in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, corporate America has been victimized by precisely the same dynamic with coupon fraud, unwittingly funding terrorism by as much as $125 million annually. “I’m probably misreading the situation but it sounds like the town wanted the day labor center to be used by illegals only.”

You’re reading it wrong. The town set up a primary location point for legal, green card holding day laborers to get them off the city streets. It works, I’ve seen it used elsewhere.

It appears some idiotic judge ruled they had to provide these services to illegals as well. Huh?

It was only a few years back that my local Pennysaver (www.pennysaverusa.com) was regularly sporting a two-page add promoting use of these benefits (in English/Spanish) stating that immigration authorities said it was alright to use them even if you did not have documentation to prove you were eligible.

The ad stated it was paid for by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

At the time I was disgusted at seeing this same ad run week after week and eventually sent it to my fine Congressman along with a letter.

I haven't seen these ads in awhile, but that doesn't mean they are not running regularly in the Spanish version of the same publication. I don't know.

Good for Herndon! About high damn time and long overdue. Tell the liberal “activist” traitor judge to go sit on an air hose and rotate.

LOL! PEOPLE POWER!

This non violent method is GREAT, far more preferable, and if the various traitors in this country have any common sense, they will "take the deal" while they can.

They should do this all over the country, just shut down all the centers.
