The Choir Celestial just got a whole lot better
One can’t deny the man’s talent. However, I lost much respect for him when he left his wife and took up with his secretary with whom he had a child out of wedlock. That doesn’t speak well of his character.
So sad. RIP, Luciano.

I disagree with you here. The two of them sing in entirely different mediums. Sting is not an Opera star, never was. However, he has a great voice. He would, when young,have been very good in one of those English boy choirs like those that sang recently at the Princess Di memorial service.
There is an interesting contrast between the operatic voice of Luciano and the folk/pop voice of Sting, which has no vibrato, and is much flatter. Pavarotti has depth and vibrato as opera singers do. Yet both meld together surprisingly well. Sting actually has a very true to key and lovely voice which is why he became such an internationally known pop star.
I was never a great fan of opera (much preferred orchestral pieces), but I could always listen to and enjoy Pavarotti.
I first heard Pavarotti live when he sang Tosca in San Francisco in the ‘70s, in the prime of his early ‘40s. What a wonderful voice, one of the truly great tenors of the 20th century. I was as captivated as I was as a child hearing my grandfather’s Caruso recordings from the early 20th century.
I agree with you: Pavarotti’s voice was certainly richer than Domingo’s. Both were very great tenors, perhaps the equals of the great tenors of the first half of the 20th century, but very different voices.
Way back when, when I belonged to one of those record clubs I was sent “The Three Tenors” CD by mistake and was told to keep it. I must have had it for years before I decided to give it a shot while I was remodeling my basement. Needless to say, I was hooked from the start and have since purchased many of his CD’s as well as Bocelli, Domingo, and others. I was actually listening to Luciano on my way home from work yesterday. RIP my friend, and thanks for opening my eyes to the world of opera!

No argument there. They just said on Fox that Pavarotti will lie in state in Italy, and the funeral service will be on Saturday, I believe.
BTW, do you have the CD's which match modern accompaniment with scrubbed versions of Caruso singing? Fascinating. I also have a couple of CDs with Caruso 'as is' - well, he and Luciano can compare notes :-) in the celestial choir now!
