Amid breezy conditions, firefighters this afternoon were scrambling to fight a brush fire that quickly scorched 200 acres outside of Morgan Hill near Henry Coe State Park, authorities said. Crews are using 10 Cal Fire engines, two helicopters and the DC-10 Air Tanker to battle the Lick Fire. No homes or buildings are currently threatened.
Bay Area residents reported thick plumes of smoke billowing out over the ridge line and traffic on Highway 101 between Gilroy and Morgan Hill had slowed.
"It is serious," said county Battalion Chief Scott Jalbert. "This has the potential of being a major fire."

Saw this one an hour ago on the way home, lots of smoke, lots of fuel in that area,, pretty good winds about now..
Have to ask my other half what is was like down there. She works in Morgan Hill.
Ol’ ‘tanker 710’ makes a reappearance. It was also in use on a fire near SLO a few days ago. Apparently the damage caused by nearly flying into a tree a month or so back has been repaired.
I was downtown at the Tapestry Arts Festival at our voter registration booth wondering where that smoke was coming from.
Yup, repaired and back in service, flew up here last week too..
It’s about 5 miles down the range from Mt. Lick on the top backside of the mountain. winds are pretty strong, could burn up a lot of brush mostly at this point..
anywhere near moorpark???
Nope - WAY north of Moorpark.
Nope, this is 350 miles North. :-)
Thank you very much. :)
Thank you...thank you!!!!
Most welcome..
News has it at 200 acres burned so far,, choppers and ground crews are there on the scene now..
Problem is there are no roads to get in at the fire.. It’s an air fought fire for now..
No homes threatened at this time..
Oh dear...hope they can get it out. It’s been so hot in California with triple digits.
CAL Fire spokesperson,, the positive is its a relatively slow moving fire , timber and heavy brush..
sounds like last fire has been awhile in this area..
They have a lot of resources ready to go.. They need to get it under control by tomorrow as the temps will be raising the next couple days.. its been in the 90s and 100 and more in this area the last few days as is.
Any power lines in danger of burning?
Haven’t heard any reports to that effect, there are lines around , not sure how close by tho..
Used to take that back road over from the central valley past the observatory back in the 50’s. My sister, who had slight speech impediment, always called it “Lincoln’s Lavatory”.
LOL,, a great view tho.
I took that back road for the heck of it once.
