Sen. John Warner decides not to run

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Republican Sen. John Warner of Virginia, one of the most authoritative voices in Congress on the military and a key figure in the debate over Iraq, said Friday he will not seek a sixth term in 2008.

Warner, 80, has held the seat since 1978, when the dashing former Navy secretary campaigned alongside his wife at the time, Elizabeth Taylor. His retirement offers Democrats a valuable opportunity to challenge the GOP for the seat and possibly expand their one-vote Senate majority.

"Public service is a privilege and I urge all to try to find time some time in their lifetime to serve the needs of others," Warner said at a news conference at the University of Virginia. "I have tried to be not only true to myself, but true to the people of this great commonwealth I've served for 29 years now."

Warner, who chaired the Armed Services Committee when the GOP controlled the Senate, thanked those who had helped give him "a magnificent and very rewarding career" in the Senate.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, a Democrat, called Warner "a good friend, a great Virginian, and a true statesman."

"He has been a strong and reliable partner to my administration, and all Virginians should honor his distinguished leadership," Kaine said.

If only Warner, Specter, Collins, Snowe, Voinovich, et al, could be replaced by Republicans our nation would be in much better shape.

Probably looking for another Jim Webb to run for Warner's seat as we read this...

Virginia is now in the "Blue State" category...well at least aqua or teal...

Dontcha love it when they call it "service"?

As if it's some big sacrifice they're making for the good of the country.

We’d have a helluva lot better shot at fighting the stalling drift to the left, that’s for sure.. those who seek to play it from the middle as moderates serve no one well, imo.

I think we’ve reached the point where only DemocRATS and retards are willing to put up with the crap in Washington. I’m afraid we are getting close to the time when we need to relook how our government works. Washington is definitely out of control.

Yeah. I get all choked up when the elites tell me to serve the needs of others. When’s the last time he even saw the little guy, except when his driver had to take a detour through a middle class neighborhood to get to his mansion?

Top of the hour news had it and mentioned his marriage to Liz.

Senator Elizabeth ‘toss me a piece of chicken’ Taylor’s ‘Former husband’ John Warner will not run again.

Tom Davis - another RINO in waiting.

"If only Warner, Specter, Collins, Snowe, Voinovich, et al, could be replaced by Republicans our nation would be in much better shape."

And, if only Republicans could be replaced by "Reagan-type" Conservatives our nation would be in much better shape.

If you and I and others were to list all the RINOS in Congress [House & Senate], it would mean replacing probably three-quarters of the lot...[Lott too].

I like the suggestion on another thread that included Craig and Warner as a subject of Congress and the poster's response was "term limits" and I agreed. My term limits were more generous than his, but I came over to his side of thinking: He suggested One 6-year term for President; One 6-year term for Senator; Three 2-year terms for House Representative... That is, campaign, serve your time, then go back to the private-sector / business and industry.
