Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson's advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier.
Thompson's move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson's failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites.
Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate - with him in it - would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.

Why so late in the day? I thought the candidates usually had morning announcements.

I think he’s rode this gambit for all its worth, and if he doesn’t announce now he’ll be seeing a drop in his poll numbers.
I had no problem with him delaying it til now, but its time to get in or get out.

Looks like an attempt to take some of the wind out of his sails.
Though, a surprise early announcement isn’t a bad idea. Either way, I doubt it has anything to do with that dopey editorial.

That’s the thing about the conference call. This article is saying that he’s actually going to announce today officially.

I had no problem with him delaying it til now, but its time to get in or get out. I have to agree with you. I was learning toward Fred but with each passing day lose a little more interest in his non-campaign. At this point I don't think he's doing the republican party any good. I've studied the remaining republican candidates and see no reason to vote for any of them. Guess I'll look at a 3rd party or write myself in.

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. Let's not all get atwitter just yet, folks. This is from an un-named, unknown source "close to" a member of the committee.
I have a huge boulder of salt hanging around here somewhere.

Maybe next we can have thread saying that an announcement has been made that there won’t be an actual announcement, and the rumor of an announcement was just that.
