I guess it’s kinda’ like a dog thing. The first person tries to make as smelly a mess (Post) as he can and then virtually walks around it sniffing.

If it stinks enough, the other one will reply with one just as smelly. Each walking around sniffing their post and then the other’s.

And so it continues until one grows weary and wanders off.

Then again a person can be just sucked in and about 10 posts later reality hits him and he goes “What have I done?”
