Twinkies maker halting bread operations in Southern California, cutting 1,300 jobs

Troubled Interstate Bakeries Corp., in bankruptcy since September 2004, early today said it is closing four bread bakeries in Southern California.

The closings will eliminate 1,300 jobs, which besides those in the bakeries, include jobs impacted by route consolidations. Interstate, the maker of iconic Hostess Twinkies, will continue to make and sell snack cakes in Southern California.

In midday over-the-counter trading, Interstate Bakeries shares were up 10 cents, or 9.09 percent, at $1.20.

The company said the pullout was due to lower-cost, non-union competitors, and irrational pricing,

Those factors, combined with high fixed costs, have continued to make the market unprofitable for the Kansas City based baking company, one of the largest in the U.S., and also the maker of Wonder bread.

“Because of the impact on employees and their families, exiting a market is probably the most difficult decision a company can make,” Chief Executive Officer Craig Jung said in a news release. “At the same time, our primary consideration has to be the company’s long-term survival and financial health.”

Don’t worry, they made enough of them for 50 years, their average shelf life with all the preservatives.

The locally owned bakery in Dallas saw the writing on the wall, and sold out to Bimbo a few years ago.

Who was that?

Mrs. Baird’s bakery.

“Mrs Baird’s Bakeries was founded in 1908 when Ninnie L. Baird and her family began baking bread for neighbors in their Fort Worth neighborhood. Today, Mrs Baird’s Bakeries is a division of Bimbo Bakeries USA, the Fort Worth-based subsidiary of Mexico-based Grupo Bimbo, one of the world’s leading baking companies.”

"....lower-cost, non-union competitors...."Always means "Undocumented Tourists Working in Violation of the Law".

Shouldn't be a man, woman or child working for that company making a campaign donation to any Democrat or RINO.

see #28..Better than a Moon Pie!!

Make it yourself..filling (one that uses fluff)available on line. Easy as making cookies. Grew up on these things.

Now they are hot on the "specialty" market like the reappearance of the gourmet cupcake.

Not with the price of corn going up in the present ethanol rage. Corn being a food staple..corn products feed the poor, ethanol is not the solution.

""in a highly unequal contest between the poor having to compete for the basics on which they live, and the rich who want to burn it to run their cars."

Good article

The real question is: How many are actually bimbos? Let's be honest, and I hope this doesn't sound racist, but the average, illegal alien from Mexico just doesn't look like this...

I have my doubts as to the bimbo content of their products.
