When I first saw the recently released Indonesian translation of Barack Obama's book "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming The American Dream", over here in Southeast Asia I was completely taken aback not only by the violent imagery in new title of the book, "Menerjang Harapan: Dari Jakarta Menuju Gedung Putih", but by the fact that it was not really a translation at all, but rather a completely different title than the original book.
A correct translation of the title of Obama's book would have been "Keberanian Harapan: Pemikiran Untuk Meraih Kembali Impian America" which translates into "Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming The American Dream". However, the title for the Indonesian translation of Barack Obama's book is "Menerjang Harapan: Dari Jakarta Menuju Gedung Putih" which translates into "Assault Hope: From Jakarta to the White House".
The problem with direct translations is that often times they never make sense. The words "menerjang" (assault or attack) and "harapan" (hope or expectation) make sense when used separately, but used together, the term "menerjang harapan" makes no sense in Indonesian. But while the term makes no sense, it does however present a mental picture to the native Indonesian speaker, the imagery of a "hopeful assault" a "struggle for victory" or to put it more bluntly, a "jihad", or as the Indonesians see it, Obama's "jihad" for the Whitehouse. For the native Indonesian speaker, this figurative language creates a mental image whereas the translation of the book's title can actually come to mean "Jihad: From Jakarta To The Whitehouse".

I've got the book now and will be reading it in it's entirety and then translate it back into English ~ it is going to take be some time, but I have a feeling this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Please keep us informed as you read and translate. In my opinion, how Obama’s quest for the WH is perceived by Islamists is precisely why he cannot be POTUS.
Needless to say, I don't have a copy of the English version or Obama's book and so it should be interesting to see what this ends up looking like when I finish.

I’m still of the firm opinion that the Dems will pass up Obama and Clinton and nominate Edwards; and that if they do, he will be very, very hard to beat.
So no, I’m not about to help that cause!

I think the Indonesian title is the correct one for Obama’s book.
It was the English title that got it wrong.
Unfortunately for any “true believers” in Barack overseas he is not even going to win the nomination, let alone the Presidency.
And don't forget, according to Joe Biden he is also Clean! :O)

I’m sweating bullets that the beast has the nomination sealed. I’ve never considered Edwards a serious candidate;Hillary, since her win to the senate,has been a juggernaut.
Maybe I’m out of touch.
I think it’s a reasonable difference of opinion, one sees both sides frequently here on FR. Some are certain she’ll win the nomination, and certainly her current poll numbers validate that opinion.
Nevertheless, I cannot envision her as the first woman president, which is a huge hurdle by itself...and she has other problems. Nor can I take Obama seriously. Edwards, however, has the usual things going for him: white, male, name you can spell. Plus he has the youth, apparent health, cute kids, and fluffy hair that Dems seem to go for on a regular basis (every 16 years since Kennedy).
When they get into the voting booth, I think the Dems will go for the most electable, but this time that’s Edwards also.
Remember, they laughed at Clinton once. I know I did (1988).

A friends wife is from Indonesia, she had called family a couple weeks ago and they told her that the Indonesians were very happy with the thought that Obama would win and we would have a muslim President.

Yes he sure does..........I was amazed to pick that fact up on the radio, as I listened to old and young females swoon, when they talked about Obama.
