I liked Caramelgal’s post, number 50. She got it right.

I know what D.U. is like because, just like many fellow FReepers, I’ve been there.
Now let me teach you some etiquette. If you place a quotation above a response then everybody assumes the quotation is from you unless you clarify who it is from. Just like the example I’m about to give...

There was nothing creative in this beyond a creative act of smart assiness. There was no striving for excellence or rising above in this. This was just needling the authorities by dint of having found an expoitable chink in the dress code. They deserve very limited kudos for being clever enough to spot an opening. The idea that they’re some kind of martyrs for liberty is silly.

What bothers me is not “questioning masters”. What bothers me is that you are an oddball.

And furthermore, their whining about the consequences is pretty uncool. Do you think Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin would have whined? These punks don’t know a thing about being a rebel.

I enjoy a debate on the issues but silly name calling?
You’re better than that. Please try harder.

You’re right but remember they’re kids. They still have a lot to learn.

He made the worst mistake a high school senior could do in San FranciscoMaybe, but this is Naples, Florida, the most strongly Republican part of the state.

When I was in HS, dress shirt and tie was the dress code.
On feast days, blazers were required in addition.

Now pastors of churches are supposed to be in their pulpits dressed like Mafia thugs with Vsn Dyke beards, too.

All this time we were concentrating on turning out idiot students.
Looks like a lost cause when they are being taught and administered by morons.
Nothing worse, and certainly nothing better makes sense to these functional idiots.
Someone should be reviewing his/her resume.

Well, this is true. I’m being a little hard on the Beaver, aren’t I. Yes...give them time. They could certainly mature into the kind of smartasses that make our Republic great.

Frankly you seem so taken with the word “masters” that you sound like Renfield from a bad version of Dracula. “May I eat some more spiders Master?”
I don’t have “masters” here on earth. I have an employer. I question him when something makes no sense to me. Ultimately though even if it makes no sense I’m going to either do it or find myself another job.
School for children under 18 however is different. Of course they can “question” anything they wish. In the end however the school policy is the school policy, and the children must abide by it.
As for calling you an oddball I have read enough of your postings on this thread that I am comfortable with the insult.

I thought it was better than a polo shirt, he said. So, my friend and I thought why not take the extra step? It says business dress. A coat and tie are business dress. Instead we were thrown in a room where we couldnt talk.
So, just what did you and your friend learn in school today? You learned that Big Brother abhors independent thought and creativity. You learned that it is more important to be part of the hive, the collective. You will therefore be punished for taking that extra step and for thinking outside the box. Shame on you! You deserve to be punished for your thoughts and you certainly should not be allowed to talk or express yourself or allow your poisonous ideas to spread to others.
Your corrupt ideas about individual freedom and initiative are contra to the goals of the State. You need to learn to accept that it is better to blindly give into authority and blend in with the lowest common and government sanctioned denominator. Personal expression is bad enough, but showing yourself to be above standard? Well that might make you stand out as superior in some way and might make the under-achievers feel bad about themselves. And cant you see how wrong that is?
You must learn to accept that polo shirts of solid color of white, gray, green, pink or khaki demonstrates your unquestioning obedience to the State. We are keeping a close eye on you. We will be reading all your essays and monitoring you very closely from here on out. Be warned!

The students in question, for whatever reason, chose to violate the dress code. What you have here is a well dressed smart ass.Administered by so-so dressed dumbasses?
Does the concept of "minimum requirement" mean anything to you?
Once the definition of "business attire" becomes subjective (on the administrator's part) arbitrary and capricious" comes to mind.
or other labels that might suspend my posting privileges...
Just saying.

I’m 51 years old and I don’t think I could define a polo shirt. Isn’t Polo a brand name? Is a polo shirt ever called anything else? Do neckties work on polo shirts?
To: Artemis Webb
Generally support your stance on this thread.
These children were probably looking for almost just this situation--portraying the authorities as a great injustice.
What child chooses to put on a suit? Maybe a few, but odds are that this was to provoke, not from personal taste.
And authority should not be challenged by breaking the law.
Just showing that you have some support on this issue.

It doesn’t have to be in the thread.
