Newt Advises Fred
Human Events ^ | Robert Novak

Posted on 08/24/2007 9:37:08 PM PDT by Doofer

Fred Thompson's decision to announce his presidential candidacy with a video was suggested by Newt Gingrich, who is considered a possible contender himself.

Former House Speaker Gingrich has indicated he will run only if Thompson does not or his late-starting campaign crashes and burns. Actor-politician Thompson plans to follow the model of Democrat Hillary Clinton by launching his campaign with a video, followed by a fly-around to several cities.

Gingrich has expressed contempt for becoming one of many announced Republican candidates at crowded debates. Thompson has decided to be one of many at the Sept. 27 debate at Baltimore's Morgan State University.

I wouldn’t like Gingrich as a candidate, but he’s got a good mind and could be a terrific advisor. His ideas are good; his presentation not so much.

Isn't Novak a bit ahead of the game? [grin]

I’m hoping Thompson gets into the race soon so I can see how he stacks up against the other GOP candidates. His previous Senate stint seems to be inconclusive from what I hear and read.Beyond that he apparently cuts a fine figure as a tv star which seems to be enough for a lot of people but not for me !!!

Have you considered that some people have heard and read a lot more about Fred than than you and don't think of him only as "a tv star?"

Don't insult others by projecting your limitations and ignorance onto them.

Lately I have been kinda wanting Newt to jump into the fray. He has done some stupid (on the lines of Clintonese fooling around), but I think he may have learned he lesson. Be that as it may, he is a brilliant thinker and a true intellectual. I don’t think he could win the Republican nomination, and would probably lose in a general election agains Sen Clinton (his negatives are as high as hers), but I think he would force the other candidates to stay well right of center. I think he would make Fred stay to the right, and thus make him a winner. Newt could also act as the hatchet man on Rudy. Newt would slaughter Rudolph in any real debate on issues.

Like I said though, he couldn’t win a general election because his negatives are so high. In a way this is a shame, he might make a fair president.

Great post.

I think he would make Fred stay to the right, and thus make him a winner.

That could be his greatest contribution. And he could be a very visible supporter who's still independent, and could be very vocal if Fred strays.

Don't know about others but I've only seen Thompson on the boob tube once and that was when I saw Hunt For Red October many years ago.

Why.... does the most important country in planetary history... at it's most crucial existential timeframe in ITS history.... have to sort through the bargain bins to extract a President to lead it.

How could this be?

Newt is a hypocrite and has disgraced himself with his personal conduct. He’s so full of hot air and is just leeching on to Fred to pimp his book. Good luck Fred! You’ll need it.

I know more about him than you do. He’s a middling, moderately conservative milquetoast.

Isn't it amazing? We keep seeing the same few names in politics over and over-another Clinton, another Bush, here comes the same old Gore again (he seems to have been running for President his whole adult life).

In a nation of about 300 million, why do we get these people who are "OK, I guess"?

Is it because running the world (which is the job, in many ways) doesn't seem to have enough return on the investment of life, energy, money, effort?

We should have a hundred or a thousand AWESOMELY qualified candidates each cycle, and have to institute a new primary system to whittle them down to just a dozen INCREDIBLE candidates. Voting booths should be jammed because we can't decide which great candidate we want to vote for.

And yet, we keep getting these battered, sorta-okay people.

There are SO many things wrong with this, I'll start with the most obvious.

1) Follow the model of Hillary Clinton???

2) Looks like Fred's campaign is going "straight to video". You'll know things are bad when his campaign announces on Cinemax.

I think this linking FDT and Hilary in style is a bit of projecting on the part of the writer. Fred may do a video but I doubt Hilary was his inspiration...
