Romney Encounters More Core Opposition Than Clinton Wednesday, August 22, 2007 Advertisment

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has finally surpassed New York Senator Hillary Clinton in the polls. Unfortunately for Romney, it’s a poll measuring the number of people committing to vote against him.

The Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% of Likely Voters would definitely vote against Romney if he’s on the ballot in 2008. That’s a point higher than the 43% who would definitely vote against Clinton.

So much for the argument that Mitt Romney is electable. Fred Thompson is a much more appealing candidate, with far lower negatives

Mitt is unelectable.

Each company's methodology is a little different, but Mason-Dixon's poll in June also had Mitt as the most disliked GOP candidate, as did Gallup's poll from August. Gallup said that:

* Mitt had the worst favorable/unfavorable spread of any Republican among Republican voters

* Mitt had the worst favorable/unfavorable spread of any candidate among independent voters

Mitt Romney is not electable. He will never win, because conservatives like me won't vote for him.

To be a "conservative" and get elected in Massachusetts means that he is a liberal in my neck of the woods.

He signed state wide mandatory health care into law in Mass. What more does anyone need to hear about the guy?

Fred Thompson is my guy. A real life Federalist. A Thompson/Hunter ticket, with Newt in the cabinet, be still my little Constitution huggin heart.

I like pretty much all of Romney's stances on the key issues, but if he's unelectable, I'd just as happily go with Fred Thompson.

The article doesn't say, and there's really no way of knowing, but I wonder how much of that is "I won't vote for a Mormon." That'd be a sad commentary on American Society

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.

I really didn’t expect that some Americans still hold that position until I talked to this lady from church. She’s a staunch Republican, and generally is open minded. While she can live with Mitt’s position on issues, she said she won’t vote for him because of his religion.

Mitt’s flip-flopping costs him the support of the conservative base.

His religion will cost him at least 5% in the general election, which no Republican can afford (Imagine the October 2008 multi-part Time Magazine cover story series: “What is Mormonism?”)

One conservative family member opposes him because “Mormons are just a little too comfortable with authority for my taste.”

After his policies I have always felt something off about him....sir or madame I say you have a wise relative....its on the nose.

Wait until he enters the race. Why do you think he’s waited as long as he has?

Because he could. Fred Thompson has none of the liabilities that Romney does. He’s doing very well and hasn’t even begun to campaign yet. When he does, watch out.

Wait until the media gets done with Fred. He’ll be dubbed a Bob Dole without the resume.

I keep hearing how Hillary is unelectable yet she looks like the sure-thing nominee for the democrats - and you know she’ll run a better campaign than Lurch or that stiff Algore.

Watch out? For what? His numbers to tumble? He’s gonna peak the day he announces and it’ll be downhill from there. I’ve heard the guy’s speeches, he’s a drip.

I’ve got no issue with Mitt’s Mormonism — I’d take it over Hillary’s liberal ‘Christianity’ any day of the week. But I recognize that that is one (not the only by any means) but one reason he is unelectable and has such high negatives.

* * *
I remember law school where the Catholics (including myself), Mormons and Evangelical Christians stood together with the odd agnostic Fiscal Conservative/Libertarian against the rest of the crazy liberal student body.

It was there that it was made clear that I (as a practicing Catholic) have a lot more in common with Mormons than with my liberal Presbyterian brethren (crazy Dutch Bishops not to the contrary).

Look, if you’re a Mitt fan, I’m sure that the article is bringing you news that you don’t want to hear. I’m sorry about that. However, your comments display your sheer ignorance when it comes to Fred Thompson and what the media can do to him. They’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink at him and he’s only getting stronger. And he hasn’t even STARTED YET.

Mitt isn’t gaining traction and yes, Fred Thompson’s presence in this race has a good deal to do with that. But take the MittGoggles off for a moment and look at the big picture.

Too bad. I didn’t realize you were so deep in the Mitt that you couldn’t see the forest for the trees.
