I got the impression that he and his buddies knew about the story since they were in the same area when all of this happened. He seemed to have heard about the book and Luttrell's story. He implied that the helicopter crew was angry that Marcus claimed that they were negligent in dumping the ropes.
He also said that he knows those mountains and that he would never accept a mission up where the SEALS went since it had no cover. "That would get you killed," he said. I may see the Ranger -- his name is Jonathan -- again and could ask some follow up.
His reaction bothered me, since I had just finished the book and was pretty enthused by it.
