Well, I for one, will continue to watch O’Reilly’s show. IMO, he is usually spot-on with his analysis and opinions. I don’t always agree with him, but I don’t expect to agree with anyone 100% of the time. I’ve been on FR long enough to know that it would be a lie to say that comments posted here have not included what would be termed as “hate” speech. I read some threads about this topic where some people said that FR doesn’t allow bad language. Those folks missed the point. It’s not all about cussing, it’s about hateful comments.
I heard that 8 moderators were fired during and/or after the latest “purge”. Of course, I only know what I read and hear, so I can’t vouch for it. Perhaps others know the truth and would share it with us. I can’t even imagine how difficult their jobs were, and I have often wondered if those moderators were fired because they had stood up against what was going on around here, or what.
Cyberspace is full of inconsistancies.
The only folks I saw banned were practicing the epitome of hate speech, with JR as the target. Some of the worst bile I’ve ever seen on FR- I’m surprised he was as tolerant as he was.
Wow, really? You missed some important threads/comments. LOL :)
Who is Bill O’Reilly??
BTW, I was referring to the moderators who were fired, not forum posters who were banned.
I don’t watch O’Reilly. Or Hannity.
I don’t have cable or satellite.
I come here to get news tips and then do my own due dilligence.
Once in a while, I’m lucky enough to break a news story here.
I know that some long standing members of FR are no longer here. For what ever reason. We can’t always get along. I try to, but, someday, I might get my walking papers. It will be my doing. I’ll not blame anyone else.
It has been pointed out that O’Reilly (or his staff) fabricated posts for his “hate site” broadcast.
All in all, I couldn’t care less what Bill has to say. He’s just another talking head. I’ll do my own DD, thanks.
BTW.....I’ve never liked Ann Coulter.
Shocking.......
I think Ann Coulter is right on many issues, but I think she’d be far more effective and more of a positive influence if she wasn’t so brash and rude. No, I’m not a huge fan of Ms. Coulter due to that. When one wears the brand of ass-?? on their sleeve, it tends to make others not take them nor their opinions seriously.
It is unfortunate that FR has lost so many good people, the good next-door neighbor, who we may not agree with on every issue, but dang, they’re good folks who are just as much a part of the Republican party as you or I.
One never knows when one will be “purged” from this forum. Experience shows that the wind never blows from the same direction. Supporting President Bush during his first run for President was a sure way to get banned. Speaking out against illegal immigration was bad before it was good. Google it. Many good people were purged (zotted) because of their strong views against amnesty for illegals and their views regarding illegal aliens in general. Now, those same people would be welcomed with open arms as long as they march in lockstep with any other issue that has changed course midstream. John Kerry doesn’t own the market on “flip-flopping”. Test the wind before you post. ‘nuf said.
As for BOR, I must admit that he could have found far better examples of hateful talk if he had done more research. It’s a good thing for FR that he didn’t. Perhaps that’s why some haven’t pursued the matter.
And so it goes with cyberspace forums, politics and ash whippers in general. ;)
BTW, my classes read “The Cell” last year (and watched the movie “Obsession”) and really liked the Cell.
I went to your home page, very interesting! After my husband and I read your books, my two youngest will be adding them to their growing list of “Must Read”!
Currently I'm working on a book called "50 Liberal Lies of History." Most people say, "How did you limit it to 50?"
If you get tired of non-fiction, by all means check out my 9/11 thriller, “September Day.” It features a professor, naturally, as the hero.
Anyway, I was really inspired by the book. Then this Sunday at church I met a Army Ranger back from Afghanistan and I was talking to him about the war and stuff and mentioned Lone Survivor. He immediately said, “Oh, that guy made up most of that story.” He said that the SEALS are not respected by the Rangers because the SEALS are wreckless and arrogant. He said that he was in the area during the Lone Survivor events and while he wasn’t on the mission, he knows that the story “doesn't add up.”
So, I thought. This is just rivalry between forces. But, then I starting thinking about all of the extreme details in the book and how it sounded just like a script for a movie. For example, right before he is picked up and rescued, he meets and stares through the sights of his rifle into the eyes of the terrorist commander he was sent to kill. That would make a great scene.
Also, he reveals that he lies to his captors twice about having diabetes and that he was a doctor. But, he doesn’t explain why these lies were necessary since his captors were friendly. Does he have a character problem with the truth?
On the other hand, the military must have believed him because his buddy Mikey received the Medal of Honor and I assume that they have to provide some kind of fact finding investigation.
I want to believe this guy is an honest hero, but I wonder.
Question: do any of you know if Luttrell could have made up details of the story?
I don’t really know what to say to all this. If the guy you met at church was indeed a ranger, well, it’s weird to me that he would (and especially upon just meeting you) disparage another branch. Those rivalries are internal, not usually shared with non military types. I also do not think SEALs are wreckless but you can do research on that. Try reading any of Dick Couch’s books. He goes into great detail about the process of making a US Navy SEAL and has written several books on the subject. Luttrell told a good story and I have no idea about anything he did or did not embellish. However, I feel inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. He said the force of the rocket explosion blew him off the ledge he was on. I have not been in battle but it seems plausible to me. I am not sure Marcus knew his captors were friendly until it was over, and at any point the Taliban could have decided not to tolerate the village honoring the custom of taking care of someone in need of assistence. I think the entire situation was very tenuous.
“Lone Survivor” makes a good gift. I bought several copies.
Thanks. I was wondering if others had heard that the story is in question. I actually had met my Ranger acquaintance when he was in the US last year, so I wasn’t just a stranger. He didn’t saying anything negative about the SEALs until I had talked quite a bit about the book and my enthusiasm for the story. He admitted that he had not read it. But, he seemed to be setting me straight and was quite emphatic that he thought Luttrell’s story is questionable.
I tend to believe Luttrell just because Mikey got the medal of honor, so authorities must have had some pretty good evidence. It is a fantastic story, but some times the truth appears that way.
I was responding to your questioning it. I was not aware it was in question, generally. Actually, quite the contrary, but hey, it’s a free country and it’s good to question things.
Yep.
“He admitted that he had not read it. But, he seemed to be setting me straight and was quite emphatic that he thought Luttrells story is questionable.”
Oh; not to be argumentative, but how did he know what Marcus was saying and that he considered it questionable if he hadn’t read the story? I figured he had. The news gives people two minutes to make their point so the only way someone would know the story is to have read it.
‘O’Reilly supports our troops and their mission. I’m pleased that he is having Marcus Luttrell as a guest. I missed the first airing but I’ll catch it later this evening.’
Depends on what time it is with BOR. Did you catch the opening segment hit piece on Blackwater last night?
