Border Patrol checkpoints to remain open [South Texas]

U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints will remain open, stopping and checking northbound vehicles in the event of a hurricane and mandatory evacuation, officials said Friday.

Oscar Saldaña, a spokesman for the Rio Grande Valley Sector, said the Border Patrol would function as usual.

“(The) Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector will continue its National Security Mission by maintaining both checkpoints open,” he said in an e-mail.

At both checkpoints in this sector, at Falfurrias and Sarita, individuals will be asked about their immigration status in the United States and every vehicle will be inspected, he stated.

“The personnel of the checkpoints will be augmented to assist with the increase volume of vehicles,” Saldaña said.

The agency is not concerned about the influx of vehicles at the checkpoints during a hurricane and evacuation, he said.

“As the volume of cars increases, the number of personnel will also increase,” Saldaña wrote in the e-mail.

It was not clear what would happen in areas west of here.

“(The) RGV Sector is responsible for both the Falfurrias and Sarita checkpoints,” he wrote. “I cannot speak to any checkpoint that may be out of our area of responsibility.”

Should a hurricane hit the area, Saldaña stated that agents would continue work as usual.

“RGV Border Patrol Agents will continue to execute their National Security Mission of patrolling our borders,” Saldaña wrote.

Shine a flash light in the dark in country barn --- roaches come crawling out of the woodwork. That's the way I see it happening "west of here."
