Just announced on Fox News.
Rather unexpected, I think. I figured he'd be the heir apparent to Lott or Cochran.
I think Cochran and Lott want to try to tie or break Jim Eastland and John Stennis’s records for service.
We won't know who will be running until after the November 6 elections in Mississippi.
The longer Cochran and Lott stay in the Senate, the longer Michael Moore stays out of the public eye and becomes a “has been”. Michael Moore is the only Rodent who could make an open Senate seat in MS a competitive race.
Also, I think Lott and Cochran think their senority helps in getting hurricane relief for their state.
I heard he has a third nipple. I'm just sayin....
Well Tuck could announce her intentions now.
Thanks for the post and ping.
My mother is NOT happy.
She absolutely loves him to death.
She’ll understand when she finds out why he’s not running, though.
Then, she’ll be only disappointed.
Agreed with your entire post.
Maybe the guy’s retiring because he’s sick of D.C. and wants to return to civilian life. Jeez FReepers get a grip and kill the stupid conspiracy theories.
It’s pretty sad when we begin to expect these people to be in power for life. Whatever happened to the idea of term limits?
Oh, that Michael Moore :-)
Tuck is a dim who switched parties only due to being unable to win as a dim again.

The fact that Chip is retiring makes it even more disappointing that black conservative Republican Nic Lott narrowly lost the state house primary election a couple of weeks ago. However, I’m sure we can come up with a solid conservative to represent one of the most conservative districts in the nation.
Maybe Chip is taking a few years off in preparation for running for the Senate when either Trent or Thad retires.
I think she could’ve won again as a Dem (at least in the general), but where she was vulnerable was in the primary. The ‘Rats just dumped their last oldtime statewide officeholder last week with George Dale (Insurance Commissioner), who has held the job since 1976. Only liberals backed by trial lawyers can win the rodent primaries now.

The reports I’ve seen said he wants a few years of family time and there’s speculation about lobbying (i.e. i need some money).
But I disagree on the notion of the Senate being heis next obvious achievement. There is another option. I don’t think Thad is thinking of quitting. Maybe Lott, who will have 4 more years to go (which is not a bad “time out” from Washington) and one can only hope that since Pickering got his start in Lott’s staff that Trent would hand-off to him (because I for one will be glad to see Trent gone, he’s turned into the sort of Senator we are supposed to be sick of).
However, no one has yet mentioned another obvious solution - succeeding Barbour in the Governor’s mansion. Think about it, if he leaves office at the end of 2008, and the next governor campaign is in 2011, well, 3 years is nothing to be out of the limelight.
Plus, if Pickering ever had designs on higher office, governors are a lot more successful in that regard than Senators (can a man named “Chip” ever be elected president?).
Good point!
