Need More Spousal Support (Men Don't Do Housework)
Fox News ^ | August 12, 2007 | Captain Obvious

If a woman finds that the kind and considerate man she has lived with for years suddenly stops helping with the washing and bridles at taking out the rubbish, it is probably because the couple have got married.

Academics have found cohabiting couples are far more likely than those who are married to split housework evenly — but after the wedding they revert to stereotype, with the woman taking on the great majority of tasks.

The study argues that the effect holds true even in couples with a strongly egalitarian outlook before they are married, at which point women become less likely to fight for their rights...

Overall, men averaged 9.41 hours’ housework per week and women 21.13 hours. It found that the higher the marriage rate in each country, the higher the proportion of housework carried out by women.

Was this a surprise to anyone?? Anywhere?? Don't get me wrong, my gentlemenly fellow Freepers; I love men. But I'll never live with or marry another. It's just too much work.

I wish they’d stop doing studies of people and their private lives. It’s nobody’s concern whatsoever.

It’s because women get bossy once the contract is signed.

"Overall, men averaged 9.41 hours’ housework per week ..."

It would be stretching the truth to say that my hubbie does 9.41 minutes' housework per week. Not that I mind.

When people get married, human nature reasserts itself. Ironically enough, its the wife is who likely to battle any effort by the husband to interfere with what she sees as "her domain" - the house. So couples go back to doing things the way their parents and their parents before them did it. Its called tradition.

Beat me to it. As my ex-brother-in-law once famously put it “I can get yelled at for doing it ‘wrong’ or I can get yelled at for not doing it. Might as well not do it.”

Must be a slow man. I can clean the house in under an hour a week, including the yard work.

Don't be silly. That's when it's time to talk about your feelings and the relationship.

Today I did laundry, washed dishes, changed a tire on the truck, went and got gas for mowing tomorrow, I’ve got a roast in the crock pot (still need to cut veggies), washed the dogs, pulled bedding off the beds for washing, ran the weed eater over some high spots in the yard, and I’m thinking about shampooing the carpets. There are probably a few other things I’m missing.

Awwww, that’s not nice. There are really wonderful men out there. Mine works hard at work to support our family. I work hard, too, and I keep a nice home. He helps with dishes and is a dear, but I would not ask him to do housework on a regular basis. (PS - USED to be a feminist, but no more).

A goodly portion of that extra time is used by women just to clean the bathroom. I told my sons they couldn’t rent their own apartment until they learned to keep a clean bathroom, and happily, my daughter has gone one better and has delegated the chore of cleaning their bathrooms to her three boys. They’ll probably be looking for wives who don’t know that guys can do that sort of thing.
