August 9, 2007 -- Lost in a fog so thick and dark that they might well have been in the belly of Jonah's whale, six Hasidic fishermen drifted off the eastern end of Long Island for 14 hours before they were finally rescued early yesterday.
Throughout the damp night, two of the men, who'd gone on the trip wearing only their bathing suits, kept warm by sharing the traditional Hasidic garb in which their four pals were dressed.
"It was very frightening. We were just afraid of the unknown," said Levi Kirschenbaum, 22, a Brooklyn resident.

Finding your way in a fog at night is impossible, unless you have a lot of experience and the right gear. Usually in the daytime you can find your way unless there are a lot of hidden shoals in the neighborhood.
Also, it’s common for the fog to come in about that time of day.
The moral of the story is, don’t go out in a boat without taking coats and sweaters along with you, in case it turns cold. If they had taken that precaution, they could have just sat and waited for the sun to come up in relative comfort.

I once left Catalina Island on the way to Marina del Rey on my sloop and ran into a 3 hr wall of fog. Very scary, no radar, but thank God I had GPS at least.

...bad, bad joke! [okay, little grin] I'm glad that they made it back safely and hope that they go out on the water again.

I’ll bet that was a an interesting 13 hour conversation. Too bad nobody had a tape recorder.

Too bad nobody had a tape recorder. Tape recorders are like, so 20th century.
Betcha somebody had an ipod, and somebody had a cell phone.
The conversation should be up on YouTube in a few days, or hours.

Chasidic
fishermen? Oh well, it's not quite a goatherd, but it's moving in that direction!
Are these the people who listen to Chasidic bluegrass?

“Ill bet that was a an interesting 13 hour conversation. Too bad nobody had a tape recorder.”
Having been lost on a car trip with 4 young Hasidim (we overshot an entire state thanks to a map mis-read and went 4 hours out of the way), I pretty much bet I can give a blow-by-blow.

Yes. One time I sailed up the coast from Mamaroneck to midcoast Maine in a four day fog, about 400 miles with a watch and a compass and charts and tide tables, and we never saw land—just the buoys we were aiming at. But it’s not something I’d recommend doing to anyone who hasn’t spent a lot of time on the water.

I’m not sure I’d go anyplace but port in a four day fog, without radar. (Even then, you’re likely to get run over by a Russian freighter.) My point was, how hard can it be to find the east coast of the United States in a Boston Whaler, at least if you have a compass.
