Two years earlier, in 1978, Ambassador Andrew Young described Robert Mugabe in an interview with the Times of London. “Does Mr. Mugabe strike you as a violent man?” the Times reporter asked. “Not at all, he’s a very gentle man,” Young replied. “In fact, one of the ironies of the whole struggle is that I can’t imagine Joshua Nkomo, or Robert Mugabe, ever pulling the trigger on a gun to kill anyone. I doubt that they ever have.”

The Carter Administration-WORST ADMIN EVER......

Cathy Buckle, author of Africa Tears and Beyond Tears, had her farm taken away by Mugabe during his land grab. She told this writer, “At first I supported change. But now just look at our country.”

Another liberal gets mugged.

The ugliness of Zimbabwe is kept quiet because of limited internet access. Mugabe bans foreign reporters and harrasses his own.

Who knows how many opponents have been quietly killed with no one knowing or too afraid to tell?

People are starving to death there and have in the last several years but there’s no media allowed in like Darfur.

We get a shadow of the ugliness that is “Zimbabwe” and nothing that Ian Smith ever did could ever be compared to what’s happened with Mugabe.

But in the past few years, Mugabe’s erstwhile supporters have been forced to acknowledge that he is the brutal communist dictator that his critics had exposed him as more than 30 years ago.

I haven't read any such acknowledgments.

Perhaps they are hoping for a Sean Penn visit.

Are there any countries which didn’t suffer a decreased standard of living after escaping from Brittish colonialism? (Obviously USA is an example. Let me qualify my question by adding “after 1850”)

American Colleges have been brain washing kids to socialism for many decades now.. Little wonder Andrew Young and probably YOUR OWN KIDS have become socialists.. There was a time when a BIG GIVERNMENT republican was a joke.. NOT anymore..

The word DEMOCRACY has become a holy word.. to leftists and those influenced by them.. A democracy always has been MOB Rule by mobsters and is the source for socialism.. Democracy is the social political disease that causes socialism..

Whats missing in this story is all the liberal leftist white farmers that AIDED Robert Mugabe in his rise to power.. Many of those that have not been murdered already are still there.. Just deserts one might say.. their cries of oppression should go on deaf ears..

In the event of a revolution the people of Zimbabwe don’t have to worry about a new leader even worse than the one they have. Mugabe is as bad as it gets.

Venezuala is headed down the same path. Watch Chavez squander the wealth of that nation.

As another poster has already noted, that’s the same path Hillary or Obama would lead us down.

Lots of blood on a lot of hands in the matter. Post-colonialism was, according to European academics, the clear and ineluctable progress of history - if that sounds Marxist, it most certainly is. Class theory maps rather poorly to the actual tribal structure of African society in everything but the violence. Racism serves only to muddy the waters.

This mess happens consistently when social and political theory insist that the only way to progress to an imaginary future is to kill the occupants of the present. In theory farmers may be replaced easily, in practice they may not. In theory the rich may be plundered and their wealth redistributed and the economy will improve, in practice it does not. In theory justice may be obtained by tearing down oppressive class structures, in practice it merely transfers that oppression into the hands of a new elite and intensifies it. In theory the state withers away once the power is taken from the hands controlling it, in practice it grows under new management.

It is the stubborn refusal of social and political theorists on the Left to admit that the predicted outcomes have not taken place and that the fault is within their theories, that has produced this factory of misery. By their works do ye know them, and their propensity for deflecting blame is wearing a little thin.
