OAKLAND, Calif. — A veteran journalist and newspaper editor who was shot to death on his way to work reportedly received threats before he was murdered in what police are calling a premeditated hit, according to The Oakland Tribune.
Chauncey Bailey, 57, editor of the Oakland Post and a former reporter for The Oakland Tribune, was shot about 7:30 a.m., police said...
Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said police don't have a motive for the killing, but it did not appear to be random.
He also said it's not clear whether the attack had anything to do with Bailey's journalism work but investigators would be looking at that angle.
Early Friday police surrounded an Oakland eatery, Your Black Muslim Bakery, which Bailey reportedly had been researching before he was killed...

FWIW, that heading showed up summer 2005 and seems never to have been linked to anything. That was about the time of the liquor store thuggery, and perhaps it was related to that...an addition for intimidation, or perhaps with intent to actually post something at some point.
Yes... the Zebra Killings (mid 1970s in San Francisco/Bay Area) WERE related to the Black Muslim Bakery chain. I know because I lived through it. The idea was that a new recruit had to kill a white to prove himself - thus a wave of B-on-W killings. One of the things noticed by eyewitnesses was that the suspects often seemed to make their getaway in a black Cadillac.
I lived at the time in an apartment on Market Street. There was a Black Muslim Bakery store right across the alley from my building. I went in there a couple of times to get bread (or their specialty, bean pie—better than it sounds!). The people in there were so hostile that I did not want to go back. From my window I could see their parking lot. Funny, I thought, look at the black Cadillacs in that lot! Ha ha!
NOT so funny... a few nights later I heard shots, dogs barking, glass breaking - the cops had raided the place. It was indeed the HQ for the Zebra Killers.
It creeped me out that I had come within range of the feared killers - I guess they didn’t want to attack anyone too close to their home.
