GOP Presidential Hopefuls Visiting Thatcher

Republican presidential hopefuls are seeking the blessing of the woman called conservatism’s "last remaining great icon” – former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Fred Thompson, said to be on the verge of announcing his candidacy, visited Thatcher in London last month, saying he wanted to "remind her of America’s affection for her and pay our respects,” the New York Sun reported.

Mitt Romney had an audience with Thatcher last fall.

Now Rudy Giuliani has made plans to travel to London in September and deliver the inaugural Margaret Thatcher memorial lecture to the Atlantic Bridge think tank. He too will meet with Thatcher, who served from 1979 to 1990.

"Since the passing of Ronald Reagan, Lady Thatcher is the last remaining great icon of the conservative movement,” said Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Centre for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, who told the Sun:

"All the leading Republican candidates attach huge importance to the Anglo-American special relationship.

"In contrast, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are obsessed with the notion of being popular in continental Europe despite the fact that France and Germany are highly unlikely ever to stand with America in a war.”

I don't think there is any way that Roody will impress the Iron Lady.

Margaret Thatcher may be the greatest British Prime Minister in our times, the Winston Churchill of her era.

the inaugural Margaret Thatcher memorial lecture

Isn't it unusual to have a 'memorial lecture' named for somebody who is still alive?

Why not? Guiliani is a great American leader, and she’s always had a keen ability to identifying those.

Guiliani is a great American leader, and she’s always had a keen ability to identifying those.

By sheer fate he happened to be mayor of NYC during a time when the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained nearly 8000 points from where it was when he took office. So, by extension, the NYC economy did very well, but Roody can claim no credit for this.

The first WTC bombing was a few months prior to Roody taking office, but in over seven years as mayor he did nothing to solve known evacuation problems and all the while he placed a command center in the middle of a known target which served to add to the catastrophe of 9/11. So, Roody does deserve blame for this, though his corrupt police commissioner Bernard Kerik didn't help (which shows how poor a judge of character Roody is).

Now, Roody may have been a decent prosecutor, but there had to have been some reason that Reagan demoted him and got him out of the DOJ.

And to top things off, Roody is a bleeding heart liberal who supports abortion, militant homosexuality, gun grabbing and amnesty. So, while Lady Thatcher will no doubt treat Roody graciously, I rather doubt she will see him as "great leader."

I’m sure Rudy will impress Thatcher with his favorite evening gown.

Rudy was a great MAYOR of NYC. That's it. He is not a great American leader.

See what I wrote in #7. Cleaning up Times Square was a decision that any mayor could have made, it was not an accomplishment. The NYC economy was as much a result of the stock market as anything else. Roody was at best a mediocre mayor of NYC, he only seems good because for decades their mayor had been totally incompetent.

What about Brian Mulroney (spelling??) in Canada?? Wasn't he a pretty good Conservative too?? Or does he just seem Conservative because every other Canadian leader of the past few decades has been a limp-wristed socialist (ie. Bill Clinton looks like a Conservative when compared to Uncle Joe Stalin)??

I think Rudy will impress Lady Thatcher. The memory of him leading NYC during the 9-11 attacks is very similar to the Queen Mother leading Britain during the London bombings in the 1930’s.

Courage knows courage. I hope they get a good picture.
