Eliot Spitzer made his name as a corruption fighting attorney general who forced reforms on Wall Street. As governor, he promised to take that campaign to Albany and end the state government's reputation for political dysfunction.
This week, though, it was Mr. Spitzer who was under fire for underhanded tactics.
His successor as state attorney general, fellow Democrat Andrew Cuomo, issued a report Monday saying two of Mr. Spitzer's top aides were involved in a plot to smear the governor's political nemesis, Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, by releasing records to the media on Bruno's use of state drivers and state aircraft for trips that included GOP fundraisers.
No one was accused of breaking the law, but the report found that policies designed to protect public officials' safety were broken for political gain...
Mr. Dopp and Mr. Howard told Mr. Felton that records on Bruno's aircraft use were being sought in response to a reporter's state Freedom of Information Law request. But no reporter had requested the information, according to Mr. Cuomo's report...
Mr. Felton said he didn't realize he was part of a political scheme...
Mr. Cuomo's report said the records were created "without considering any potential for security concerns' for Mr. Bruno, the 78-year-old head of the state Republican Party, who has said he required state police transportation because of death threats...
Bruno's use of the state aircraft was appropriate under state policy, the attorney general's report said...

Spitzer is what you get when you cross Hugo Chavez with Richard Nixon.
That’s a good point. Mind if I borrow it from time to time?
Use it freely and often, if you like.
This is the way Democraps fight corruption. Maybe when they take the WhiteHouse back they can find a group of Americans in a compound in America to burn. I love the American sense of responsibility.
You mean Hugo Chavez and Pat Leheay surely.
That's not what this is about.
This is about the rehabilitation of Andrew Cuomo, in the odd instance that HRH Hillary!ous actully gets herself elected.
Defending a Republican, from Democratic transgressions???? Please....This is all about Andy's anticipated AG confirmation hearings...
Of course. To the democrat mind, the fact that Republicans occupy any given office is in itself evidence of corruption.
That’s what it’s about from Cuomo’s side, certainly. But do you doubt for a minute that Cuomo’s report was accurate? The only point you’ve really got here is that if Cuomo were not competing with Spitzer, he would have fixed the report to protect Spitzer.
He’ll be more careful in the future, for he has great plans for national office.
This will be put behind him, and the MSM will continue to adore him.
This is, after all, the same guy who hired Dietrich Snell and kept him from testifying before Weldon's commitee...
Spitzer is a paranoid, corrupt, power-hungry and unprincipled?
Who knew!
Between Spitzer, Andrew (Evil Eyes) Cuomo and Bruno, I feel like Henry Kissinger felt about the Iran/Iraq War. It’s a shame they can’t all lose.
Senate weighs own inquiry As lawmakers ask what Spitzer knew, committee could delve into scandal
Spitzer is dangerous since he will use his power to hurt those who oppose him. And what is more scary is that the people of NY do not care, and reward him for his assault on liberty. I suppose countless people who voted for Spitzer are among the ones who dare to say Bush is taking away our rights because he wants to catch terrorists.
Maybe I shouldn’t even be writing this or Spitzer will come after me. ;) Glad I don’t live in NY, but why should that stop him?
FWIW, NYS is mostly made up of red counties.
This is just more proof of why Upstate needs its own state.
Excellent. Live by the sword, Eliot, die by the sword....
“The gov’s aides steered the Times Union toward the idea of filing the request. The paper fell for it hook, line and sinker and filed a FOIL letter - but not until after State Police began keeping tabs on Bruno and compiling the documents. (Oops.)”
This makes it sound as much like an abuse by the media as it does like an abuse by Spitzer.
