McCain loses key South Carolina supporter (Fred alert!)
CNN ^ | July 22, 2007 | Mark Preston

Posted on 07/22/2007 10:00:33 AM PDT by Josh Painter

After a two week political freefall, Sen. John McCain received welcome news late this week when a new CNN poll showed he still maintained strong Republican support in South Carolina, a crucial Southern state with an early primary.

The senator from Arizona was standing firm despite an implosion that has temporarily crippled his presidential campaign.

But if the one-time frontrunner hopes to re-energize his presidential bid, he is going to have to convince the likes of Cyndi Mosteller that he is the only candidate who can keep the White House in Republican hands.

Mosteller, a former chairwoman of the Charleston County Republican Party, is a true grassroots activist who is willing to speak her mind and defend her candidate from attacks and criticism by opponents.

She was a vocal advocate for McCain in South Carolina during the 2000 presidential contest when supporters of then-Texas Gov. George Bush effectively derailed his bid to win the South Carolina primary.

This time, with McCain now appearing at his weakest, McCain won’t have Mosteller to defend him. She is waiting for former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee to formally enter the race...

Mosteller said her decision to back one of McCain’s potential rivals came down to his support for immigration reform.

“I see it as a national security issue,” she said. And Mosteller predicted that other McCain backers who oppose his stand on immigration also will turn away from McCain to support Thompson.

Two weeks ago, Mosteller said she co-hosted a meeting at a downtown Charleston hotel for more than 30 Republicans interested in backing Thompson.

The group consisted of people already backing McCain and several of the social conservative candidates in the race such as Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and California Rep. Duncan Hunter...

Someone should ask McCain what he thinks of his partner in crime in assaulting the Constitution (Russ Feingold) proposing a censure of the President for assaulting the Constitution.

I wonder if Fred will put the hat into the ring before 2009.

So, to your way of thinking, Thompson should jump in early because Hillary started it and the others have chosen to follow? September is the traditional beginning of the campaign season, isn’t it?

Yes he should, because everyone else out there is making progress and lots of campaign cash in fund raisers by going for it earlier.

McCain has ALWAYS been his own worst enemy...

His unearned arrogance and inability to see beyond his own ambitions have blinded him to what is best for AMERICA...

McCain is long overdue to become a small cipher in the trash heap of history

Thompson's rising in the polls. Thompson's just done some fund-raising on the East Coast just this week.

If Thompson waits until September and then is successful in becoming the party's candidate, he will have done the electorate a huge favor, I think. He will have spared us from an almost 2 year-long campaign season.

That’s his call, nobody else’s. I trust him to run his own campaign, just like I would trust him to run his country.

I didn't state myself clearly in my post #8 to you. I said, If Thompson waits until September and then is successful in becoming the party's candidate, he will have done the electorate a huge favor, I think. He will have spared us from an almost 2 year-long campaign season.
Change it to "He will have spared us from a future of almost 2 year-long campaign seasons."

McCain’s problem has always been: Schizophrenia! Supports Bush in Iraq, is pro-life, yet pushed for illegal immigration, was opposed to tax cuts, and favored suppressed free political speech. Remember,McCain’s political hero is TRoosevelt. Having interacted with McCain, here in Az., I can tell you he’s a panderer and egomanic. Refuses to listen to points of view that oppose his, even in the face of obvious fact. Remember, his comments to Sen, Coryn(tx) on the immigration bill. That’s typical of J.McCain.
McCain forgot one very important element in his pursuit of the Republican nomination for President: Grass Root Republican’s despise him. McCain’s arrogrance and independence wore thin. He was his own worst enemy! it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy !!

If Fred is not in the race until September then he will not have to spend the vast fortunes that the early birds are now spending.

McCain was never the "Frontrunner," <<<(figment of imagination by Liberal press) even when he was the only one running. There were always more people opposed to him than for him.

Look at the fundraising accomplished by Dem candidates as opposed to Rep candidates.

IMO There is a lot of Conservative/Rep money that has not been donated yet. It is there, waiting for a truly Conservative candidate they can support.

A) McCain needs to bow out. Of the race and the Senate.

B) These other candidates need to show some upward momentum or follow McCain to the door as well.

No reason for the 1-3% crowd to keep mucking up the process of picking a leader that is capable of holding the White House. Either they start showing up, or start shoving off.

Go Fred.
