I may err, but as he was head of his clan or country, instead of calling him Robert Bruce, he was The Bruce. I assume this because the head of the MacDonald Clan was The MacDonald; head of the Campbell Clan was The Campbell, etc.

Seems fair as in the case of Lady Diana,...She lost the “the” when she and “the” dude divorced.
No longer THE Princess of Wales, just plain ‘ol Lady Diana, Princess of Wales.
Oh that Royal protocal is so confusing and meaningless...Though history in itself is quite intriguing.

Better to lose her “The” instead of her head, as Hank VIII woulda done. OOOOOPs, somehow it all ended quite the same as ‘ol Hank woulda wanted it to, who could imagine that?
