Carnal Knowledge | What fuels the hatred of homosexuality?
Philadelpha Inquirer ^ | 17 July 2007 | Faye Flam

Psychologist Jonathan Haidt wants to help liberal types like me understand why some people condemn homosexual relationships as immoral...

...But why do so many people think homosexuality is disgusting? I never had any problem with it.

University of Pennsylvania psychologist and disgust expert Paul Rozin says it's particularly a guy thing - most heterosexual men are disgusted by the thought of touching other men. Rozin recalls experiments in which researchers asked subjects how disgusted they'd be if a Q-tip that had been in the mouth of either a man or a woman was subsequently touched to their own various orifices.

Women didn't care much whether the swab had touched the mouth of a man or a woman. But it mattered to men, who - surprise! - were not at all disgusted by the Q-tip that touched a woman but totally grossed out if they thought it had touched another guy's tongue.

Isn't it kind of babyish to declare gays immoral because you think their sex lives are icky?

... Haidt says he was inspired by the University of Chicago's Leon Kass, who headed President Bush's Council on Bioethics from 2002 to 2005. In an earlier essay, called "The Wisdom of Repugnance," Kass wrote that feelings of disgust come from "an emotional expression of a deep wisdom. . . . Shallow are the souls that have forgotten how to shudder."

well, Brokeback Mountain was critically acclaimed by some, but didn’t do very well at the box office. Maybe this is a subject that most people aren’t comfortable with???

Obviously the problem is with the person who feels the disgust, not those engaging in the activity they deem disgusting.

I wonder if this "disgust expert" will do studies on the sufferers of Bush Derangement Syndrome?

It’s a matter of following directions from the owners manual.

I do have problems with it: its against God's design, the act is unnnatural and its a health hazard. Three things wrong with homosexuality and I'm prejudiced. There are sound reasons for being being against this moral affront to our human nature.

Would liberals have the same understanding for smokers and tobacco companies?? No way they would say, millions have died from smoking. Tobacco companies are merchants of death and smokers are their enablers. Both are banned from schools and children. Gee Mr Liberal, sodomy has caused HIV, STD where millions are suffering and millions are dying. Gay bars are hip, gays are loved and every child in America must be atleast offered the prospect to explore this alternative lifestyle.

Kinda silly...

I find homosexual acts to be abhorrent.

I’m also disgusted by those fine folks who want to screw horses.

But that’s probably my prejudice acting up again.

Isn't a bit of a leap in logic to assume the "yuck factor" is why folks declare it immoral? And here I thought it had to do with biologically unsound practices that would threaten humanity's survival if practiced by the majority and effectively erase any and all clarity about male and female identity.

It’s an amazing world we live in. Al Gore and his followers are liberal and proclaim that global warming is a moral issue. They are allowed to talk about morality and global warming, presumeably because they are liberal. But you are not allowed to talk about morality related to homosexuality or marriage or abortion or any other “conservative” point of view.

We’re in Orwell’s “1984” in some ways. Language is one way were in “1984”. In the case of global warming, you can talk about the morality of it. But not in the case of marriage and family or homosexuality.

I don't hate homosexuals at all. As a matter of fact, some of the people I love are homosexuals.

Love the sinner, hate the sin.

I’ve seen more “hate” exhibted towards normal people by perverts than the other way around!! But the perception is that it’s the other way around.

“Isn’t it kind of babyish to declare gays immoral because you think their sex lives are icky?”

Set the question of morality aside, and just consider the question of “icky”.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 11,736 men died of AIDS in 2001. Of that number 5,513 were “men who have sex with men”; and a further 1,075 were “men who have sex with men, and inject drugs”. A total of 1,307 got the disease from “heterosexual contact”.

Some of us have chosen a biblical worldview to guide our lives. And homosexuality goes against that grain. The Designer of the universe did not create Adam and Steve, He created Adam and Eve. And when God calls something an abomination, and I am not going to declare it OK!

As to the "revulsion" thing...maybe it is built into us!

Homosexuality was a diagnosable mental illness until the era of political correctness emerged. In my opinion it still is!
The Scriptures clearly speak of it as a sin.....that should settle the issue since God is Sovereign in the world He created.

This sentence escaped the editor's red pen? Sounds like it was written by a Valley Girl -

Yep - post #5 - way it's meant to be.

Shivering is the body's reaction to cold and a signal to 'get warm'

Adrenalin is the body's response to danger - kicking in the flight/fight reaction.

revulsion is the body's NATURAL response to 'icky' things we should avoid.
