China suspends U.S. meat imports

Beijing — (AP) China has suspended imports of chicken feet, pig ears and other animal products from seven U.S. companies, including the world’s largest meat processor, in an apparent attempt to turn the tables on American complaints about tainted products from China.

The American meat had contaminants including salmonella, feed additives and veterinary drugs, according to a list posted on the Web site of China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine late Friday.

The U.S. and other countries have cracked down on Chinese products since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found in April that North American dogs and cats were poisoned by tainted Chinese pet food ingredients. Since then, a growing number of Chinese products have been found to be tainted with potentially toxic chemicals and other adulterants.

Frozen pork ribs from Wichita, Kan.-based Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. contained the leanness-enhancing feed additive ractopamine, the agency said. Frozen pig ears from Kansas City, Mo.-based Van Luin Foods USA, Inc. were found to contain ractopamine. Frozen chicken feet from Atlanta-based Intervision Foods was tainted with salmonella, and frozen pork from Atlanta’s AJC International, Inc. was tainted with ractopamine, the agency said.

Both stewed chicken feet and pig ears are popular dishes in China.

It is the beginning of the ‘Import/Export’ war. ‘’You call our food contaminated, we call yours worse’’.

IMHO - all imports from China should be halted immediately. Our country is certainly capable of producing our own vitamins, growing our own produce, and raising our own meat sources (and that doesn’t include rat!)

This is what happens when you rely too much on foreign countries for imports. especially totalitarian regimes like China.

You find something wrong and they retaliate. This is standard operating procedure for them. People are sick of it here so this may backfire on them big time. In the end, they need us far more than we need them.

Wow, this is freaking rich.

Your fine products brought to you by the worst of Chinese Communist despotism and capitalism practiced in an unrestrained and avaricious manner.

“The American meat had contaminants including salmonella, feed additives and veterinary drugs, according to a list posted”

A common disease (solved by thorough cooking), evidence of enriched feed, and drugs to keep the animals healthy...

And they’re actually making a case on this?

That’s like refusing to buy a car battery based on the risk of acid spillage.

Could be a clue as to why pork doesn't taste like pork anymore.

Maybe I am just getting old but it seems to me that a lot of food dosen’t taste as good as it once did.

The environmentalist and left wing fringe vegetarians have screwed up our great life styles because they have to much time on their hands.

I heard PETA say that you can not qualify as an environmentalists if you eat meat.

Thats like saying you can not be a conservative if you support taking care of our countries children.

You’re right, food doesn’t taste as good as it used to. That’s because the small farms have become giant factories, and they focus on mass producing whatever is cheapest, most resistant to pests and disease, and stores well for travel (among other things). Flavor is somewhere at the bottom. That goes for meat, veggies, and everything else we consume.

It’s all about money. Money, money, money. Maybe someday people will realize that there are more important things in life, like a tomato that tastes good, and a family to sit down at the table to enjoy it with.

Some high end restaurants are buying, and small farms are raising, old style pigs. Fatty. Unlike todays genetic pigs which grow like chickens, fast and lean and tasteless, dry. Once a year I go to a real pig roast with a pig from a local farm. Pork marshmallow.

Anyways, I predict for the wealthy the next status thing will be to have your own farm, worked by colorful laborers, growing drug free yuppie food.

Russia suspends livestock imports from 78 foreign meat farms

restrictions were imposed on 35 meat processing enterprises from the European Union, 19 from Brazil, 9 from the US, one from Uruguay, three from China, one from Chile, two from Argentina, one from India, two from Ukraine, one from Moldova, one from Belarus, two from Vietnam and two from South Korea.

I am touched to see two such benevolent governments -- China and Russia -- display concern for their citizens' health -- and within days of each other -- quite a coincidence. /sarc
