Brokaw explores the vanishing Chilean sea bass (Al Gore Feasts on Vanishing Species!)
PMSNBC ^ | 24 May 2006 | Tom Brokaw

Posted on 07/15/2007 6:32:51 PM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

From time to time, Tom Brokaw, former anchor of NBC’s “Nightly News,” is going to stop by and bring us a story that captures his attention. This time, he has a fish tale that will likely hit you right where your taste buds are, and might have you looking twice at the menu. For his report for “Today,” Tom talks to G. Bruce Knecht author of “Hooked: A True Story of Pirates, Poaching, and the Perfect Fish,” about how this popular fish has been so overfished that it is now disappearing from the world’s oceans.

AL GORE WAS FEASTING ON THIS VANISHING FISH YESTERDAY! Doesn't he care about the world's animals?!?!

From People Magazine:

The youngest of Al Gore's three daughters, Sarah Gore, 28, married businessman Bill Lee in Beverly Hills on Saturday...The wedding took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel.... The family hosted a rehearsal dinner...Executive chef Helene An created a six-course tasting menu that included Chilean sea bass and roasted crab.

Some animals and fish disappear for a number of reasons. If they didn’t we would still have those big monster animals running around. Life goes on. One animal or fish leaves and others takes its place. Nature doesn’t live in a vacuum like some humans do.

99% of the species that ever inhabited the planet are extinct, and yet, life goes on.

If he lives in a house that uses 12 times the electricity as the average house, then the answer is “No.”

Don’t worry, Al bought some “vanishing species” credits from himself so it all balances out.

This story reminds me... I once noshed on a fine meal of Patagonian Toothfish while on holiday in Santiago, Chile... was quite yummy ;-)

"Some animals and fish disappear for a number of reasons."

In this case it is due to overfishing a species. Also, see Grand Banks.

This is a fascinating story. The Chilean Sea Bass, known originally as the Patagonian Toothfish, was unknown till the late 70s. Even then, it was used mainly as a filler in fish fingers and the like. Suddenly, the gourmet industry discivered the fish and reckless overfishing has pretty much led to the extinction of the fish in LESS THAN 40 years.

Guess there are some perils to being popular...LOL.

BTW, Wall St. Journal had an excellent article a few months ago on the high stakes game being played over the remaining toothfish/sea bass stocks by various countries.

Nature doesn’t live in a vacuum like some humans do.

Perpetual change is the only constant of phenomena.
