Plus it gives the inmates skills when they eventually leave prison (some may actually like the work and go into agriculture ;)).

Agriculture isn’t a bad place for former inmates. All of their neighbors have lots of guns.

They also had GED programs and college programs if they inmates wanted to take advantage of it.
