As someone who has been through serious depression in the past, there has never been a doubt in my mind that these drugs are beneficial. When you are mentally ill, you have an increased risk of suicide. So treated or untreated, these people still have a greater risk than a "normal" person.

The anti-depressant suicide uproar is just the media selling you fear. That's what the media does. Andyone who wouldn't seek medical help of some kind for serious mental illness just because dateline said it would cause them to commit suicide is buying the fear that the media is selling.

So true! Folks who finally get to the point of seeking medical help for mental illness are usually in dire circumstances anyway. Most people try to avoid getting medical help because of the stigma of mental illness.

That someone commits suicide after being on anti-depressants for a short time doesn't say that much to me about the drug. That says that the person finally gave up on trying to get better, drugs or no, and they'd likely been planning on doing this all along. Also, just because they'd been PRESCRIBED the drug, doesn't necessarily mean they'd actually been taking it consistently, which would need to be done to adjust a brain chemistry that has been messing up someone's life for years.
